Position: Willamette National Forest – Forestry Technician (Recreation/Trails) Individual Placement

Position Summary

The Willamette National Forest is recruiting 10-15 Forestry Technicians (Recreation/Trails) for 640‑hour, 16‑week individual placements beginning May/June through August/September 2026. The placements support recreation and trail work on the Detroit, McKenzie River and Middle Fork Ranger Districts. Trail placements work with the trail crew on maintenance tasks such as tread work, logging out, brushing, and building trail bridges or other structures.

Recreation placements collaborate with Forest Service staff to maintain, clean, and improve outdoor recreation facilities (campgrounds, Trailheads, day‑use sites), conduct patrols, make visitor contacts, collect fees, and perform facility repairs—installing kiosks and signage, replacing picnic tables, and fire rings.

Responsibilities

Duties include operating and maintaining campgrounds, day‑use sites, Trailheads, and cabin rentals, as well as conducting trail maintenance using saws and hand tools.

Trails

Maintain motorized and non‑motorized trails, log out trails using chainsaws and/or cross‑cut saws, remove brush, rebuild tread, repair or build new trail infrastructure—including bridges, puncheon, boardwalks, and walls.

Developed Recreation

Maintain and operate recreation sites: clean facilities, remove garbage, interact with visitors, educate on rules and Leave No Trace, paint/stain structures, replace signage, picnic tables, and restroom facilities, assist at compliance checks, and conduct routine maintenance at dispersed sites.

Typical Schedule

Work 4, 10‑hour days per week, with possible weekend work. Work may occur in hot, cold, buggy, sunny, windy, smoky, wet, or snowy conditions. Use tools such as chainsaws (with training), crosscut saws, hand saws, loppers, power drills, and other carpentry tools. The Forest Service provides all required tools and training, including chainsaw operations, crosscut saw, ATV, UTV, and cross‑country skiing.

Required Qualifications

  • Driver’s License
  • Ages 18–30 (up to 35 for veterans)
  • U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Must pass a background/driver check
  • Willingness to work as part of a small team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience or interest in recreating outdoors
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather, and on uneven ground
  • Ability to hike 4–8 miles in a day in rugged country
  • Ability to do hard physical labor for up to 10 hours per day

Desired Qualifications

  • Wilderness First Aid or other medical training
  • Experience with chainsaws (trails) and power tools
  • Recreation site or trail maintenance experience, or willingness to learn
  • Coursework in recreation management, forestry, natural resources or related field
  • A strong interest in resource management
  • Personal transportation

Duty Locations

Positions based out of Middle Fork, McKenzie River, and Detroit Ranger Districts.

Terms of Employment

Individual placement term is 16 weeks (640 hours) with an average of 40 labor hours per week, excluding holidays. Placement starts between May/June and August/September 2026.

Benefits

Living allowance of $11,520 dispersed monthly during the 16 weeks. A $300 gear reimbursement fund. Living allowance is taxable.
