Listed below are the seasonal positions available at Vega State Park. For each role, responsibilities and qualifications are provided.
PARK MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
Responsible for general park maintenance and cleaning of public facilities including restrooms, showers, vault toilets, campsites, picnic areas, trails, and related duties.
- Operates and performs routine maintenance on state-owned vehicles and equipment.
- Ensures quality customer service and facility maintenance, repair, and cleanliness.
- Provides information and assistance to visitors.
- May assist with carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work, and transporting materials and supplies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds repeatedly during a workday.
- Willing to work outside during inclement weather.
VISITOR SERVICES TECHNICIAN
A customer service based position involving work in a visitor center or gate entrance, greeting visitors, and may be assigned to field duties. Daily interaction with park visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
- Staff the park entrance station and/or the visitor center.
- Provide information and assistance to visitors (maps, brochures, park facilities, amenities, programs, regulations).
- Provide information to boating and non-boating visitors.
- Sell park passes, permits, books, maps, clothing, firewood, and other items.
- May sell gift certificates, registrations, and licenses.
- Operate a cash register and make bank deposits.
- Answer telephones and take messages; perform photocopying and filing.
- Collect revenue, complete shift reports and balance shift box.
- May prepare campground reservations and document visitor feedback.
- Cleaning and light maintenance of interior and exterior areas; litter pickup.
- May assist with special events or programs within the park.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
AQUATIC NUISANCE SPECIES (ANS) INSPECTOR
A customer service based position that involves inspecting for invasive Zebra/Quagga Mussels, Milfoil, or other plant species on boats and personal watercraft at an inspection point. Daily interaction with park visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
- Staff the ANS inspection station.
- Conduct boat inspections and boater interviews.
- Provide information and assistance to boaters (brochures, ANS education, regulations).
- Clean and maintain ANS inspection areas and facilities.
- Accurate counting/recording of boat inspections (written or software).
- Training in inspection methods will be provided.
- May document visitor complaints.
- Other duties as assigned.
- May be required to work eight-hour shifts at the ANS station and take lunch there.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
EDUCATION/VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
A customer service based position that involves facilitating park interpretive and environmental education programs, as well as working the park visitor center front desk. Develop and present natural resources/historical programs to park visitors. Specific duties may include:
- Schedule, plan and present Junior Ranger programs, school/group programs, campfire programs, and guided hikes.
- Schedule and present outreach programs; provide roving interpretation in campgrounds and day-use areas.
- Work with volunteers and may train volunteer naturalists; collaborate with other agencies.
- Market and promote attendance at programs; may develop brochures and materials.
- Work at the Visitor Center front desk a few days a week; assist with special events or programs.
- Collect, catalog, organize, and protect park collections of slides, photographs, specimens, etc.
- Attend trainings; perform other duties as assigned.
TEMPORARY INTERNSHIP
This internship provides an overall view of work at Vega State Park. Duties may include greeting visitors, assisting staff with patrols, trail and facility maintenance, ANS education and inspections, general construction, and other tasks.
