Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our team. In this role, you will provide essential support to veterinarians and veterinary technicians in delivering high-quality care to animals. You will be responsible for assisting with various tasks related to animal care, ensuring a safe and clean environment, and fostering a positive experience for both pets and their owners.

Responsibilities (to be performed under the direct supervision of the RVT or veterinarian on staff)

Patient Care/Handling & Treatment

Obtain thorough patient histories and assist the veterinarian during examinations
Obtain accurate weight and vital signs (TPRs – Temperature, Pulse, Respiration) and assess patient stability.
Demonstrate proficient restraint techniques for both dogs and cats, ensuring the safety of the patients and the staff.
Calculate drug doses and prepare medications for administration
Administer treatments, including oral medications, subcutaneous fluids, and fluid therapy, as well as other injectable medications via SC, IM, IV routes as directed by the veterinarian
Perform venipuncture for blood sample collection as well as IV catheter placement
Prepare treatment sheets and ensure appropriate/required treatments are completed for hospitalized patients.
Operate and monitor veterinary equipment like EKGs, capnography, syringe and fluid pumps, and pulse oximeters, ensuring proper protocols and identification of normal ranges.
Follow protocols in isolation and restricted areas, using personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control procedures.
Assist the veterinarian in providing emergency care to critical patients and assist in CPR

Surgery

Administer anesthetic induction agents and intubate patients to prep for surgery
Prepare patients for various surgery procedures, including aseptic surgical prep and attaching monitoring devices to patient
Assist in monitoring patients under anesthesia (heart rate, respirations, pulse oximetry, ETCO2, temperature, blood pressure) and maintain isoflurane and fluid rates during procedure
Post operative patient recovery
Ensure surgery gowns, instruments, and packs are cleaned and sterilized
Maintain cleanliness of surgery suite, keeping supplies well stocked and ready for surgery at all times

Dentistry

Efficiently obtain full mouth radiographs
Perform dental cleanings (scaling and polishing the teeth)
Proficiency in both simple and advanced extractions and suturing

Laboratory & Diagnostic Support

Conduct lab tests including CBCs, chemistries, and coagulation panels; ensure accurate results and follow safety protocols.
Prepare and assist with radiology, ensuring correct positioning and safety measures.

Software & Recordkeeping

Use veterinary software (e.g. Avimark) to update patient records, treatment plans, and print cage cards.
Accurately document patient care, including treatment details, medication administration, and daily logs.

Client Communication & Support

Escort clients to exam rooms, gather patient information and communicate treatment plans and updates clearly and compassionately.
Provide excellent customer service by communicating effectively with clients regarding their pet’s care
Assist with client education, obtaining treatment consent, and managing special requests (e.g., paw prints or hair locks after euthanasia).

General Duties

Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including disinfecting areas, managing waste disposal, and restocking supplies.
Handle pharmacy-related tasks (e.g. filling patient prescriptions)
Assist with patient aftercare, including handling of deceased animals and special memorial requests.

Skills/Qualifications

Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with team members and pet owners.
Experience or knowledge in medication administration
Veterinary experience and knowledge of veterinary terminology
Familiarity with hospital operations and animal care practices
Proficient in animal handling techniques with a strong emphasis on safety
Extensive understanding of veterinary procedures, including veterinary critical care concepts
Ability to perform laboratory and diagnostic tests
Familiarity with Avimark software for veterinary practice management (preferred)
Minimum of 3 years as a RVT in a small animal hospital setting

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 – $30.00 per hour
