The research project assistant will be engaged in all research projects at Reef Conservation. The role involves working closely with the Research Project Manager on day-to-day activities. We are seeking a dynamic and motivated individual with a strong scientific background who is passionate about advancing research initiatives. This position offers a variety of responsibilities in a dynamic and occasionally challenging environment, providing the successful candidate with opportunities to develop skills in various research methodologies and make significant contributions to the project's objectives.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) in biological, ecological, marine or fisheries science or equivalent experience in research or monitoring projects within the field of marine biology.
- Minimum of one year working experience
- Previous experience working at sea and conducting scientific monitoring.
- Valid PADI Open Water or equivalent diving qualification.
- Proficient in report and scientific publication writing.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on community engagement.
- Fluency in English, French, and Creole is a required for this position.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
- Proficiency in data analysis software and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) would be an advantage.
- Possession of a valid manual driving license.
- This position is open to Mauritian citizens only
Main Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Research Project Manager to execute day-to-day activities ensuring adherence to project timelines.
- Contribute actively to project planning, implementation, and monitoring, with a focus on logistical efficiency.
- Undertake fieldwork, including snorkeling and diving activities, and conduct scientific monitoring and sampling across various ecosystems such as corals, seagrass, and mangroves).
- Engage in data collection, analysis, and interpretation while ensuring the accuracy and reliability of data for reporting and publication requirements.
- Maintain databases and assist with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and spatial analysis as needed.
- Coordinate the procurement of project-related equipment.
- Organize meetings and maintain effective communication with stakeholders, partners and collaborators.
- Build and maintain positive connections with local communities engaged in research projects and convey findings in an accessible manner to enhance community understanding and awareness.
- Prepare, coordinate, and deliver sensitization, education, and training sessions on marine environment issues to varied audiences.
- Contribute substantively to the preparation of project-related documents, including scientific and technical reports, publications and other communication materials.
Other Responsibilities:
- Provide multifaceted support within the marine team, aligning with individual skills and project needs.
- Lead project components under the supervision of the research project managers.
