Job Title: Outdoor Leadership Intern – Woodruff Scout Camp (Summer 2026)

Position Overview

Woodruff Scout Camp is seeking college students pursuing degrees in Outdoor Recreation, Parks & Recreation, Adventure Education, Education, Tourism, or related fields to serve as Outdoor Leadership Interns for Summer 2026.

Interns gain hands‑on experience leading youth programs, teaching outdoor skills, managing daily operations, and working as part of a professional camp leadership team serving more than 8,000 campers annually. This internship is designed to provide real‑world leadership development and can often satisfy practicum or internship course requirements.

Program Areas (Placement Based on Interest & Experience)

Interns may serve in one or more areas:

  • Aquatics / Lifeguarding & boating instruction
  • Whitewater rafting & river safety guiding
  • Mountain biking instruction & trail leadership
  • Fishing & outdoor skills education
  • General program leadership & daily operations support

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise youth participants in outdoor activities
  • Teach skills using hands‑on, experiential learning methods
  • Ensure participant safety and enforce risk‑management procedures
  • Assist with daily program operations and schedules
  • Maintain equipment and program areas
  • Serve as a positive mentor and role model
  • Participate in staff training and leadership development sessions
  • Support evening programs and camp‑wide activities

Required Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old by start of employment
  • Enjoy working with youth in an outdoor environment
  • Ability to live and work outdoors for extended periods
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to learn and accept coaching

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous camp, recreation, coaching, or teaching experience
  • Certifications (lifeguard, WFA/WFR, CPR, boating, biking, etc.) – training available for some roles
  • Experience leading groups or instructing skills
  • Paid leadership experience
  • Housing and meals provided
  • Professional mentorship and evaluation

    Certifications available for select roles

  • Resume‑building supervisory and teaching experience
  • Networking within outdoor recreation and youth development careers

This is a residential summer camp environment. Staff live on‑site, work outdoors daily, and participate in evening programs and weekend activities as part of the camp community.
