Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Magistrate role based in Pinetown. The Magistrate will preside over criminal and civil matters, interpret and apply relevant legislation, and deliver rulings and sentences in accordance with constitutional principles. Daily responsibilities include managing court proceedings, evaluating evidence and legal arguments, drafting judgments, and ensuring procedural fairness. The role also involves engaging with court staff, legal practitioners, and members of the public, as well as participating in ongoing legal training and development to maintain up-to-date knowledge of laws and court practices.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Law and Criminal Law, with the ability to interpret and apply legal statutes and case law.
- Proficiency in legal Research to analyze complex matters and support sound judicial decision-making.
- Experience working within Courts, including familiarity with court procedures, rules of evidence, and case management.
- Ability to provide or participate in Training related to legal developments, judicial practices, and court administration.
- Recognized legal qualification (e.g., LLB or equivalent) and admission to practice, with relevant judicial or prosecutorial experience preferred.
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, with a high level of integrity, impartiality, and ethical judgment.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage a caseload efficiently, and collaborate respectfully with diverse colleagues and communities.
- Knowledge of constitutional rights and human rights frameworks, and commitment to promoting access to justice.
