Reports To: Site Manager(s)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full Time

Customary Work Days: Varies based on Business Needs and Schedule

Position Summary Berry Farms Animal Hospital Licensed Veterinary Technician is expected to assist in caring for our patients and supporting our doctors in performing the daily tasks that are essential within the veterinary clinic. In addition to completing all necessary functions of a Level 2, the Level 3 will be seen as a supporting trainer for New Team Members and assist with training.

Essential Functions

Care for the Patient:

  • Provide primary patient care and assist our veterinarians with appointments, surgical procedures, and emergencies. Must also be able and willing to routinely and successfully perform the following procedures:

o Administer anesthesia

o Perform Dental Cleanings

o Perform Intravenous blood draws

o Prepare medications and prescriptions for dispensing as directed by the doctor

o Dispense medications. Discuss administration or application of products and potential side effects with owners as instructed by doctors or technicians

o Discharge patients. Instruct clients on the care of patients at home, timing of recheck appointments, and potential adverse effects of surgeries, procedures, or medications.

o Clean and straighten exam rooms to prepare for incoming patients. Spray disinfectant on exam tables, wipe them clean, and dry them. Remove sources of offensive odors; empty trash if necessary. Check floors, walls, doors, and counters, and sweep or clean them as needed to remove hair, body fluids, and dirt

o Be able to measure and record each patient’s weight, temperature, pulse rate, and respiratory rate

o Answer questions and educate clients about basic pet care and procedures including but not limited to: immunization protocols; the administration of topical, oral, otic, and ophthalmic medications; spay and neuter procedures

o Using aseptic procedures, draw up vaccines and/or injections that doctors will administer

o Lay out and/or set up instruments that doctors will use during ophthalmic, otic, oral, and/or skin examinations, as determined by the patients’ presenting complaints, prior to the doctors’ arrivals in rooms

o Administer IV, IM, SQ, and oral medications

o Successfully insert IV catheter

o Monitor, adjust, and maintain IV infusion pumps

o Perform fecal examinations

o Prepare slides of body fluids. Air dry and stain them as directed.

o Use proper stain techniques to maximize diagnostic interpretation of prepared slides.

o Provide basic life support, including CPR, airway maintenance, and oxygen therapy

o Understand aseptic principles and apply them to surgical patients, instruments, equipment, and rooms

o Attach cardiac and respiratory monitors, pulse oximeters, or ECG monitors to anesthetized patients

o Properly position and align patients for surgery

o Properly scrub hands and arms for surgical cleanliness, and assist surgeons with aseptic gowning and gloving

o Monitor patients during surgery for depth of anesthesia, color, temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate. Alert doctors to changes in condition.

o Monitor patients’ recovery. Protect patients from aspiration and hypothermia. o Jugular blood draws

o Authorized vaccinations under supervision of Licensed Veterinarian

o Conduct Radiographic Imaging

o Grooming: bathe, nail buff, nail grind, nail trim

  • Care for boarded or hospitalized patients to include: feeding, watering, administering medication, and providing exercise opportunities.
  • Bathe dogs, as needed or requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Care for the Customer:

  • Efficiently fill in to answer phones, as needed, without direction.
  • Efficiently able to schedule appointments without direction.
  • Efficiently take payments, without direction
  • Provide empathy and understanding to the customer. Provide scripted direction and advice under veterinary supervision.

Invoice:

  • Invoice all services and products during doctors’ appointments
  • Ensure accurate and complete invoices for charges regarding patient visit
  • Facilitate physician approval prior to patient check out
  • Support quarterly physical inventory practices

Clean:

  • Clean and sanitize kennels for patients, as needed
  • Complete daily cleaning assignments before end of scheduled shift
  • Proactively seek opportunities to sanitize or straighten areas needing improvement
  • Restock supplies, food, and boutique items, as needed. Act as “backup” for Site Manager, when needed and assigned.
  • Maintain organization for hospitalized patient personal belongings

*Must be willing to support and perform other duties as assigned. Performing essential functions means – at a minimum – being able

to perform the above tasks as well as the Specific Exertional/Physical Requirements below.

Minimum job requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age with reliable transportation to and from work for scheduled shifts
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50-75% of the time
  • Must be able to safely handle dogs and cats of all sizes and demeanors.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the hospital to support doctors, patients, clients, and other team members
  • Constantly positions self to access files, computers, animals, and other essential functions of the hospital
  • Must be able to lift to 50lbs occasionally
  • Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 25 pounds regularly
  • Must be able to work effectively and positively in a team environment
  • 3+ years of Animal handling in a clinical setting
  • Must hold a valid current and active Veterinary Technology License within the state of Tennessee.
