Entomology Student Assistant-Abney Jobs in Athens, USA at Inside Higher Ed
The Student Assistant will perform a variety of duties involved in the research projects of Dr. Abney’s peanut entomology program. This position will include a mixture of field, laboratory and greenhouse work at multiple locations throughout South Georgia, as detailed in the Duties & Responsibilities section. Some work takes place out of town (transportation provided), so punctuality is needed. Some workdays will be longer than 8 hours, and the selected candidate will work up to 40 hours per week during the summer term.
Students will be limited to 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters per UGA guidelines.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Field work: assisting with planting & treatment applications, collecting plant/insect samples, maintaining alleys, harvesting plots.
- Insect colony work: feeding, cleaning cages, collecting adults and eggs, growing corn for insects.
- Laboratory work: evaluating pitfall traps and/or sticky cards for number/species of insects, identifying and counting thrips, evaluating insect damage on peanuts, keeping the lab clean.
- Greenhouse work: assisting graduate student with the care of peanuts in greenhouse.
Qualifications
- Ability to take direction and work without constant supervision.
- Ability to work in a group or individually.
- Ability to collect data in the field and lab.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and ability to enter data into it.
- Experience operating tractors and implements is a bonus but not required.
- On-the-job training will be provided.
Physical Demands
- Works outside in all weather conditions.
- Standing, bending and kneeling in the field.
- Works safely with equipment and is pesticide aware.
