Emergency & Critical Care Lead Technician – 3rd shift Jobs in Minneapolis, MN at University of Minnesota

Required qualifications:
BA/BS plus 2 years of Emergency/Critical Care experience as a technician or a combination of both work experience and education to equal 6 years. Candidates will be Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT) and have the skills to cover shifts in their areas. Additional qualifications include problem-solving and interpersonal skills, veterinary terminology knowledge, and proficiency in restraining and handling small animals.

Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred qualifications for this position include two years of supervisory experience in a veterinary or healthcare environment, along with experience in private practice and educational settings.

About the Job:
This position is responsible for the daily technical operations and supervision of the ECC service on the third shift at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The AH Pro 2 is the second level within the Animal Health Pro Job Family and is responsible for providing professional support in a specific area(s) of animal health. Gives exceptional care to our patients and clients. Provides a positive and a professional learning environment for staff, students, residents and faculty. Manages on-the-floor staffing and handles immediate staff behavioral corrections, escalating further issues to the day shift

80% Technician role

  • Provide assistance to staff, students, residents, and faculty providing clinical services to

patients in an educational setting.

  • Monitor and assist with maintaining inventory; order and stock supplies.
  • Must be able to restrain and handle animals and/or assist with animal restraint and

handling.

  • Under the direction of DVM’s, performs a variety of medical and diagnostic procedures

depending upon clinical indications and area of service; may perform intravenous and
related therapies (i.e. fluids, anesthesia, etc.), obtain fluid or tissue samples, perform
biopsy techniques, etc.

  • With oversight by a DVM, applies clinical job knowledge and competence to the

management of the patient.

  • Answers questions and explains or demonstrates procedures and equipment for clients,

residents, interns, senior veterinary students, and technician students; assists with
teaching labs.

  • Performs record-keeping tasks related to medical procedures, including recording of:

procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, client communications, census
information, etc.

  • Responsible for ensuring that all services and supplies are charged according to the

hospital fee schedule.

  • May prepare and maintain a daily service schedule including facilities such as operating

rooms, specialty areas, pharmacies, etc.

  • Must adhere to safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to work in a clinical setting and maintain, prepare, and follow clinic

protocols.

20% Operational Oversight

  • Clinical lead responsible for ECC overnight team. May entail escalation of issues with

equipment or physical space needs, and moderate complexity workflows.

  • Focus on staff nightly scheduling, workflow direction, education, and competency.
  • Provides training experience for staff and students as indicated.
  • Competent in the service and any additional requirements (laser safety), precepts new

hires, works scheduled shifts.

  • Aware of annual accession goals, guidelines for write offs, Accounts Receivable, charge

codes and estimates.

  • Understands inventory and collaborates on finances
  • Provides daily direction to staff to accomplish work goals; coordinates schedules, assigns

responsibilities, provides clear direction, sets priorities, coordinates work, builds in
accountability and monitors progress.

  • Oversee infection control and sanitation activities to ensure a consistently clean working

environment.

  • Approve/deny time and absence requests on shift
  • Facilitate and support staff participation in professional development, educational

opportunities, workshops and/or seminars as appropriate.

  • Promote a culture of positivity, teamwork and inclusivity. Resolve issues as they arise.

Understand and assure policies are carried out within the context of AFSCME collective
bargaining contract for labor represented employees.

  • Meet with staff to maintain consistent communication regarding policies, procedures and

concerns. Ensure staff compliance with all relevant policies and guidelines including health
and safety, OSHA, School and University policies. Verify training, certification is complete.

  • Maintains environment in inspection-ready condition adhering to agency standards.
  • Encourages incident reporting, teaches importance, reviews, investigates and reports

findings to the direct leader.

  • Manages conflict by supporting face-to-face resolution between team members and

mediates team member conversations as needed.

  • Navigate escalated situations involving faculty, staff, and students. Mediates team

member conversations as needed. Provide guidance to staff and offer alternative solutions
that meet the needs of all parties.

5% Additional duties as assigned

  • Provide backup for team members as needed and other special projects as assigned.
  • Continue professional development through attendance of courses, workshops, seminars

and other meetings; maintain professional certification and licensure.

  • Participates in daily rounds.
  • Other duties as assigned by Clinician or Director of Patient Services.
