Conservation Seed Increase Plot Horticulturist
The Southeastern Center for Conservation is seeking a highly organized and proactive Seed Increase Plot Technician to manage and maintain Seed Increase Plots as part of our critical conservation initiatives. This role focuses on propagating and cultivating targeted plant species, ensuring optimal seed production while preserving geneticdiversity. The ideal candidate will excel in organizing bloom schedules, performing daily maintenance, and coordinating seed harvesting and processing to support our conservation objectives.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assist in the formation of new Seed Increase Plots, utilizing a variety of species-specific soil preparations.
Develop and implement a system of controlled pruning to ensure populations bloom at appropriate intervals, preventing overlap between populations of the same species.
Conduct manual cross-pollination for species tracked by maternal line to maintain genetic integrity.
Propagate and produce planting material in the greenhouse, preparing plants for successful transplant into Seed Increase Plots.
Perform daily maintenance tasks, including weeding, pruning, mowing, and scouting for pests and diseases.
Schedule and conduct planting activities in Seed Increase Plots, ensuring proper spacing and optimal growth conditions.
Maintain an annual work plan to manage plot activities, ensuring timely andefficient operations.
Schedule and perform seed harvests, ensuring quality and adherence to project guidelines.
Accession, process, and store harvested seeds, maintaining detailed records throughout the process.
Package and prepare seeds for distribution, including % Pure Live Seed testing as required.
Record and report on daily work progress, including propagation, planting, maintenance, and harvesting activities.
Contribute to the development of species profiles and maintain comprehensive documentation to support conservation efforts.
Education
and Experience
Educational background in botany, horticulture, ecology, or a related field.
Hands-on experiencewith plant propagation, greenhouse operations, field planting, and seed collection.
Strong understanding of plant conservation practices and seed management.
Excellent organizational skills andattention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
Physical ability to perform outdoor work in varying conditions.
Familiarity with data collection and documentation in conservation or research settings is preferred.
