Companion Animal Care Associate Jobs in Houston, TX at Houston SPCA

Companion Animal Care Associate

Houston SPCA – Houston, TX

Full Time – $15.00/hrly

This role is for people who don’t mind getting their hands dirty—and find purpose in doing it every single day.

We’re looking for individuals who take pride in consistency, thrive in structured routines, and believe that small, repeated actions create life-changing outcomes.

What You’ll Do

Daily Animal Care (Core of the Role)

  • Feed, water, and care for animals on a strict daily schedule—no shortcuts, no skipped steps
  • Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, and common areas thoroughly and consistently
  • Observe animals closely and report any changes in health or behavior
  • Transport animals safely throughout the shelter as needed
  • Maintain accurate daily inventory of animals
  • Keep equipment, supplies, and vehicles clean, functional, and ready to use
  • Track supply levels and report shortages before they become problems

This is physical, repetitive work. The animals rely on it being done right—and done every day.

Adoption Support & Customer Interaction

  • Greet visitors and guide them through the adoption process
  • Help match animals with appropriate homes
  • Clearly explain Houston SPCA policies, procedures, and benefits
  • Process adoption paperwork, payments, and filing with accuracy
  • Maintain a clean, organized front lobby and counseling spaces
  • Promote responsible pet ownership and humane care
  • Represent Houston SPCA with professionalism, patience, and empathy

Who Thrives in This Role

This job is not for everyone. The people who succeed here tend to:

  • Show up consistently—even when the work is tough or repetitive
  • Don’t mind routine and can perform the same tasks with care and focus every day
  • Take ownership of details—cleaning thoroughly, documenting correctly, noticing small changes
  • Are physically and mentally resilient
  • Care deeply about animals, even when the work isn’t glamorous
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with teammates and the public
  • Stay calm in a fast-paced, emotionally charged environment

What You Should Expect

  • A fast-paced shelter environment with constant activity
  • Repetitive daily tasks that are essential to animal health and safety
  • Physical work including standing, lifting, bending, and cleaning for extended periods
  • Exposure to animals with varying temperaments, medical needs, and behaviors
  • Messes—this is real animal care, not a picture-perfect setting
  • Reward—not from recognition, but from knowing the work matters

Why It Matters

Every kennel cleaned, every meal delivered, every observation logged—these actions directly affect an animal’s health, comfort, and chances of adoption.

Your work creates the foundation for second chances.

If This Sounds Like You…

If you’re someone who:

  • Doesn’t shy away from hard, hands-on work
  • Understands that meaningful impact often comes from repetition
  • Wants to be part of a mission bigger than yourself

We encourage you to apply.

Houston SPCA is an equal opportunity employer committed to compassion, accountability, and excellence in animal care.
