SUMMARY

Provides direct support and guidance to adults with serious mental illness in a Ranch style residential facility, serves as model for self-empowerment, and advocates for adults with serious mental illness. Assists in responsibility for oversight of all aspects of the Ranch including animal care.

DUTIES

Assists in maintenance of Ranch inventory necessary for animal care and managing subcontracts for maintenance of the Ranch property.

Ensures that veterinary care is provided, and instructions are maintained.

Responsible for the instruction and oversight of clients as they learn to feed and care for animals on the Ranch. Will be responsible for oversight of all aspects of the horses involved in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) including ensuring the safety of the horses and participants during sessions.

Responsible for management of the health of the horses as it relates to their participation in equine assisted psychotherapy/learning.

Maintains physical health and good disposition of horses through conditioning and training.

Ability to be certified through EAGALA (must show 6000 hours of documented Equine Direct Care Service)

Performs Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) based upon the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model of EAP as the Equine Specialist (ES) member of the team.

Participates in EAP session planning in collaboration with the Mental Health (MH) member of the treatment team.

Maintains member records according to established guidelines and procedures and will work with members to instruct animal care activities.

The following duties involve property care to maintain a clean, safe environment for clients and animals:

maintaining feed and hay inventory, handle ordering
monitoring cleaning and inventory of tack
maintaining order in barn area

Manages subcontracts for the maintenance of the horse property.

Manages subcontracts for the maintenance of veterinary and other animal care.

Employee must be able to monitor consumer activities, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent.

A minimum of ten years’ experience in training and caring for horses.

EAGALA Certified in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy/ or eligible for certification.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of horse and other livestock care

Knowledge of safety requirements in a horse property environment

Physical ability to perform rigorous horse care activities, including riding.

Ability to maintain a safe environment

Ability to conduct daily exercising on the horses, which include riding

Ability to develop good working relationships with staff and a professional therapeutic relationship with clients.
