Role Description This full-time Wildlife Veterinarian role at RAREC – Rainforest Awareness Rescue and Education Center is an on-site position based in Iquitos. The Wildlife Veterinarian provides medical care, diagnostics, and treatment for a variety of rainforest species, including injured, orphaned, and rehabilitating animals. Daily responsibilities include performing clinical exams, administering medications, conducting routine health checks, developing treatment and rehabilitation plans, and maintaining accurate medical records. The role also involves education initiatives through training vet students in a daily basis.
Qualifications
- Licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) with demonstrated experience in wildlife, exotic, or zoological medicine.
- Knowledge of rainforest and tropical species health, diagnostics, surgery, anesthesia, and rehabilitation practices.
- Experience working in field, sanctuary, or rescue settings, with strong clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain detailed medical records, follow biosecurity protocols, and uphold animal welfare and ethical care standards.
- Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with animal caretakers, educators, researchers, volunteers, and local communities.
- Capacity to work in remote, resource-limited environments, including flexibility with schedules and emergency call duties.
- Proficiency in Spanish and English (or willingness to learn Spanish), with clear communication skills for training and outreach.
- Physical ability to handle fieldwork, including lifting, outdoor work in tropical climates, and safe handling of wildlife.
- Previous experience in Latin America, rainforest ecosystems, or non-profit conservation projects is an advantage.
