Duties
Leader within a wildland fire module or crew in fuels management, fire suppression, monitoring, and post-fire activities. Applies an understanding of firefighter safety, fire behavior, topography, weather, fuels, and training to direct suppression operations and recommend tactical strategies such as attacking, controlling, or mopping up fires, building or patrolling firelines, cleaning up burned areas, suppressing spot fires, felling snags or trees, and cutting brush.
Ensures readiness of assigned crew members and equipment for specific fire or daily work assignments. Participates in or leads physical fitness programs. May serve as an alternate in other fire program areas such as logistical dispatch, cache warehouse, incident business, and administrative support.
Leads fuels management projects or participates in more complex projects including data gathering for monitoring programs, prescribed fire, mechanical and biological treatments, inventorying fuel beds, and piling vegetation debris.
Leads firefighting personnel by directing their activities during wildland fire suppression or serving as a situational leader on small crews, involving building firelines, burning out, mopping up, and patrolling firelines.

Qualifications
This key fire management position is categorized under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard as a Senior Firefighter. Minimum qualification standards must be met prior to placement. Details at https://(Use the “Apply for this Job” box below)..
Prior wildland firefighting experience is required. You will not be considered without it.
The maximum age is 37 (except for veterans preference eligibles). Candidates must be selected before their 37th birthday. Qualified preference eligibles may apply regardless of age if the duties require it.
Your resume MUST include BEGINNING and END DATES in MONTH/YEAR format, and reflect FULL-TIME/PART-TIME or total HOURS worked per week.
Only experience and education obtained by 05/13/2025 will be considered. You may qualify at GS-06 if you meet the following:
One year of specialized experience at least GS-5 level in wildland fire control, prevention, or suppression, including leading firefighting crews and performing fire suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, fuels reduction, and prescribed fire activities.
Additional qualifications include:
FFT1 and S290 certifications. Submit a copy of your IQCS Master Record showing qualifications.
Volunteer work and unpaid experience are credited. Prior to appointment, you must pass a physical exam and medical tests, including vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and mobility. You must also pass the Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test): a three-mile hike within 45 minutes carrying a 45-pound pack. Details at https://.
