Wildfire leads are expected to participate and excel by suppressing fires using methods such as digging hand guard, water delivery systems, operating power saws, and other practices. Working as part of an organized crew within a defined command structure, wildfire employees work long hours in stressful or potentially dangerous situations and are expected to work extended periods with little time off.
When not on fire-related assignments, crews will work on base, maintaining gear and facilities, or participate in project work such as silviculture, trail building, tree planting, brushing, as well as scheduled physical training and community activities. As a responding unit, firefighters must be available for assignment while on standby and respond within an assigned timeframe.
Firefighters need to be in excellent physical condition and demonstrate a high-energy work ethic. They must be able to follow directions, work cooperatively within diverse teams and across the organization to achieve goals. Flexibility regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and organizational structures is essential. Dedication to workplace and fireline safety is critical.
Responsibilities:
Safety:
Maintain a high level of personal and crew safety.
Participate in SNRC’s OH&S Program and follow its policies.
Lead by example in fire suppression, ensuring effective teamwork and safety standards.
Establish effective communication with crew, transportation, and others.
Operate and maintain firefighting equipment safely.
Perform strenuous work in remote areas under adverse conditions.
Travel safely by various transportation modes.
Maintain personal health and fitness for firefighting duties.
Quality & Professionalism:
Maintain professional demeanor at all times.
Attend and complete additional fire suppression training as required.
Work extended hours, be available for standby, and travel extensively.
Follow instructions accurately in a disciplined environment.
Participate in camp shifts, living in camp environments for up to 16 days.
Ensure daily equipment and supplies are organized.
Perform non-fire tasks like camp upkeep as assigned.
Present oneself appropriately for daily assignments.
