Peterson Smith Equine Hospital + Complete Care is a full-service equine practice with a high case load. Established in 1981, the clinic has grown to be one of the most highly recognized equine practices in the United States.
We are looking for a reliable, self-motivated, team player to join our equine surgical technician team. You must have strong communication skills and be able to proactively anticipate patient and surgeon needs. The successful candidate will need to be able to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, high stress environment.
The position is full-time and contains an after hours on-call component. You must live within 30 minutes of the practice to be considered for this position.
This is an ideal opportunity for a veterinarian technician looking to expand and develop additional skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities for this position:
· Accurately prep and set up the surgical suite with all necessary tools, supplies, medications, and materials needed to properly perform the scheduled surgical procedure.
· Assist the surgeon by handing out necessary surgical tools, supplies, medications, and materials during the procedure.
· Safely hold, handle, and restrain the horse during induction, medical treatments, and imaging procedures.
· Prep patient for surgery by preparing and administering pre-op medication; properly clean and groom the patients for surgery and take to the induction stall.
· Clean or “scrub” the surgical site with proper antiseptic solutions to reduce risk of infection.
· Collect, prepare, and label various specimens (including blood, urine, feces) for laboratory testing.
· Ability to administer pre and post op medications.
· Assist with the “laying down” of the patient and placement on the surgery table.
· Prepare surgical packs; properly sterilize all surgical instruments; repackage items to maintain sterilized condition.
· Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the surgical suite, treatment rooms, tools, supplies, and equipment used during and after surgical procedures and treatment; ensure compliance with infectious disease protocols; follow all company safety protocols; correctly handle and dispose of sharps and biological waste.
· Ability to perform all general veterinarian technician duties, which may include prepare and administer patient medications, perform hand walks, holding and restraining patients, set up for diagnostic and imaging procedures, complete tasks per the treatment plan, restock barn pharmacies and load and unload patients from trailers.
Required Skills:
· Previous veterinary technician or surgical experience.
· Excellent horse-handling experience.
· Basic understanding of animal anatomy.
· Reliable with a strong work ethic.
· Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
· Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
· Must be able to follow both written and oral treatment directions.
