OverviewJoin our dynamic veterinary team as a Veterinary Technician and become a vital part of providing exceptional animal care.Veterinary Technician Job DescriptionSupervisor: General ManagerJOB SUMMARYThe Veterinary Technician performs duties which may include assisting veterinarian with procedures, providing medications and maintaining staff informed off procedures, assisting veterinary with spay and neutering and vaccinations, cleaning, sanitized and maintaining medical areas in order. Assists with intake exams and weekly foster animal wellness checkups. Performs data entry into computer system on a daily basis. Provides on-call emergency phone support for animals in foster care. The responsibilities described in this job description are necessary to perform the duties of this position but should not be construed as a complete description of all the requirements that may be inherent in the position.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS● Assist the veterinarian by setting up procedures, helping maintain the flow of patients, adhering to standards that keep animals safe, and keeping treatment areas and labs clean and organized● Ability to efficiently pre-medicate and induce patients, intubate animals and prepare all patients for surgery. Prepares surgical packs● Under veterinarian’s orders, administer medications and vaccinations. Maintains clinical records in shelter database on a daily basis, including performing data entry● Participate in daily rounds, observing rescue animals for signs of wellness. Reports findings to veterinarian● Prepares weekly medical report● Assist in the provision of medical and surgical care of animals in the rescue● Knowledge and ability to intake and release patients, including delivering post-operative or ongoing care instructions in a competent and friendly manner● Takes inventory and prepares clinic and shelter supply order on a weekly basis● Includes medicine inventory entered into rescue database● Ability to handle 20-25 (on average) dogs and cats per day● Ability to assist with euthanasia● Ability to perform on call duties for foster care animals who may need emergency veterinary assistance● Position is based mostly within the medical department but will also include assisting in care of rescue animals● Works well independently and also as part of a team to perform responsibilities listed● Must be able to recognize or learn to recognize characteristics of animal behavior (for example; be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior)● Must be able to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals (will train) – the use of safety equipment is mandatory● Other duties as assignedEDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIESSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis job has no supervisory responsibilitiesQUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Technical proficiency with Mac and PC platforms, as well as Microsoft Office.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.● A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a veterinary technician in a veterinary clinic environment● Experience with animal handling and restraint, animal health, behavior assessments● Experience with giving intravenous injections and intubating animals for surgery● Some experience in anesthesia and surgery is required and a willingness to learn the abilities not yet experienced● Applicants must be self-motivated, willing to challenge their physical and mental abilities● Must possess excellent reflexes.
