Pay Range: $22 to $32 hourly

Schedule: Monday – Friday with flexible hours and at least one weekend per month

Position Overview

The Veterinary Technician provides critical support throughout the surgical process by assisting with patient preparation, anesthesia, surgical procedures, recovery, animal care, and facility operations. Team members are expected to maintain a strong commitment to animal welfare while contributing to a safe, organized, and collaborative work environment.

All employees at GMD Labs are expected to have foundational knowledge of animal care and perform basic vivarium or kennel cleaning tasks independently.

Key Responsibilities

Surgical Support

  • Assist with preparation and execution of preclinical surgical procedures
  • Prepare surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies while maintaining sterile technique
  • Perform technical procedures including vascular and arterial catheterization, drug calculations, and administration and monitoring of anesthesia
  • Prepare animals for surgery, including fasting, pre-anesthetic treatments, and positioning
  • Monitor patient vital signs throughout anesthesia and promptly communicate changes or concerns to the veterinary or surgical team

Animal Care & Husbandry

  • Assist with pre- and post-operative animal care
  • Feed, water, monitor, and observe animals for changes in health or behavior
  • Maintain clean and sanitary animal enclosures according to facility protocols
  • Accurately document observations and promptly report abnormalities to the veterinary team

Operating Room & Equipment

  • Prepare, clean, and maintain facility and surgical suites before and after procedures
  • Sterilize and organize surgical instruments and equipment
  • Restock surgical supplies and maintain facility and inventory readiness

Compliance and Safety

  • Follow institutional, USDA, IACUC, and facility policies related to animal care and research
  • Maintain accurate documentation of surgical procedures, patient care, and inventory
  • Follow established biosafety and workplace safety procedures to protect personnel, animals, and equipment

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with veterinarians, surgical, and research teams
  • Support the Lead Technician and Clinical Manager in maintaining best practices
  • Communicate professionally and contribute to a positive, team-oriented culture

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Foundational knowledge of animal handling and husbandry
  • Comfortable working with large animals
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods
  • Reliable transportation to our Pomona, CA facility
  • Basic proficiency with Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.)

Preferred

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification or equivalent
  • At least one year of experience in a clinical or veterinary environment
  • Experience with anesthesia monitoring, surgical aseptic technique, and IV catheter placement

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is an in-person position based at our Pomona, California facility.

Work schedules are flexible but require availability Monday through Friday, with at least one weekend each month as needed to support research activities.

Because our work involves preclinical research, technicians should be comfortable working with large animals in a surgical and laboratory environment while maintaining strict compliance with animal welfare and safety standards.
