General Summary:
Under general direction, conduct a variety of functions related to veterinary nursing in the context of biomedical research in a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) environment, such as biological sample procurement, clinical laboratory work, data collection and data entry. Assist with pre- and postoperative treatment of large and small animals involved in surgery, as well as, assisting with study procedures. In addition, assist with inducing and monitoring general anesthesia and as an operating room technician during various surgical procedures. Perform other tasks such as animal husbandry and record keeping in accordance with study protocol requirements to accomplish study and regulatory compliance objectives.
Primary Responsibilities and Competencies:

· Assist with daily treatments (research and clinical) of large and small animals in accordance with laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) and GLP regulations.
· Assist as an operating room technician during surgical and necropsy procedures including preparation of supplies and instruments for procedures, assist in OR setup, sedation and transport of animals, blood sample collection, technical assistance during procedures, induction and monitoring of general anesthesia, and processing and storage of biopsy and necropsy tissue specimens.
· Assist in transfer of data from assays and clinical records into project databases including data entry, scanning of documents and x-rays, data layout, and data analysis and presentation.
· Assist with general animal husbandry activities including room sanitation, feeding, and record keeping and general health observations in accordance with SOPs.
· Maintain and organize laboratory inventory and regularly update order list.

Required Education, Experience and Certification:
· One year of experience in animal handling/health
· Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Windows
· Ability to work limited hours on weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
· Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
· Must be able to wear personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, lab coat, scrubs and other apparel as required
Preferred Education, Qualifications & Experience:
- Veterinary Technician training and certification
- Previous experience in a biomedical research or a veterinary environment

Working Conditions
· Employees will be expected to work inside throughout the year.
· Employees will be expected to handle animals and lift large livestock.
· Employees will be working with hazardous chemicals and anesthesia.
· Employees will be required to always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
