Description: Responsible for providing veterinary medical support to company clients inside and outside of the Operating Theater to enable reproducible research. Responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, policies and procedures. Responsible for performing animal care duties according to established protocols including evaluating and monitoring animal health, reporting abnormal conditions, monitoring animals during acute and chronic procedures, and providing clinical treatments as directed by staff veterinarian or the investigator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist researchers in the performance of minor or complex surgical procedures by monitoring anesthesia and animal vitals prior to, during, and after surgery or complex procedures.
Assist researchers and veterinarians in complex surgical procedures as needed by providing hands-on techniques and technical expertise.
Apply emergency medical knowledge as necessary while prioritizing data gain and minimizing animal loss.
Assist researchers with all surgical suite equipment including X-rays, EKGs, Ultrasounds, Power Injectors, etc.
Provide the highest quality veterinary care and services for research models across a wide spectrum of species according to established procedures.
Provide treatment plans to animal care technicians by following company policies and approved animal care use protocols.
Assist the Diabetes Research Team as needed with excursions, blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration and PICC maintenance in catheterized animals as needed.
Recover or euthanize animals according to established procedures.
Maintain knowledge of protocols, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with GLP, USDA, AAAALAC, AWA and OSHA regulations inside and outside of the Operating Theater.
Ensure accurate and timely record keeping.
Maintain cleanliness and organization in Operating Theatre and associated support areas.
Maintain professional working relationships with clients and staff from all departments.
Perform husbandry tasks according to established procedures as needed.
Must be able to adapt and learn new skills with the addition of new species, new procedures, and added responsibilities.
Weekend and holiday work is required.
Additional job responsibilities may be assigned by management as needed.
Job Requirements:
Education and Experience:
AA or equivalent experience in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Technology, or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred; ALAT certification desired.
Minimum of 1-year experience in veterinary medicine with technical skills in blood collection, injection administration, and proper restraining techniques required.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Job entails animal allergen exposure. Job may require immunization, depending on exposure to various species.
May include but is not limited to Tetanus, Rabies, TB, MMR, and/or Hepatitis B.
This position requires standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50lbs, team lifting up to 250lbs, cleaning instruments, sanitizing rooms, setting up and performing recoveries, and performing repetitive movements.
