Job Title: Kennel Technician

Reports to: Kennel Manager/Assistant Adoption Coordinator
Job Type: Full-time or Part-time
Salary: $11-$13 per hour
Job Summary:
The Kennel Technician is responsible for providing daily care for the animals housed in our facility. This includes feeding, cleaning, exercising, monitoring health, and maintaining a clean and safe environment for both the animals and the staff. The position requires a strong love for animals, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while supporting our mission of finding permanent, loving homes for animals in need.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Care:
Feed and water animals according to established schedules.
Provide exercise and playtime for dogs, ensuring they are mentally and physically stimulated.
Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by veterinarian assistants.
Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, or distress and report concerns to the supervisor or veterinarian assistant.
Ensure all animals are housed in a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.
Facility Maintenance:
Clean and sanitize animal kennels, cages, and other areas of the facility to ensure a hygienic and odor-free environment.
Ensure that food and water bowls, bedding and other equipment is washed and disinfected regularly.
Ensure that the kennel facility and food room is kept organized and well-maintained.
Customer Service:
Assist with interactions with potential adopters, providing information about the animals, their needs, and personalities.
Educate the public about responsible pet ownership and the rescue’s mission.
Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records of each animal’s care, including feeding schedules, medications, health issues, and special instructions.
Track and report any changes in animal behavior or health to supervisors and veterinarian assistants.
Team Collaboration:
Work closely with other kennel attendants, volunteers, and staff to ensure the effective operation of the shelter.
Assist with training new employees and interns, as needed.
Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.
Other Duties:
Assist in the transportation of animals to veterinary appointments, foster homes, or adoption events as needed.
Assist with physical plant maintenance duties.
Help with organizing and participating in adoption events or community outreach programs.
Other duties as required.
Safety and Emergency Protocols:
Follow safety protocols when interacting with animals, ensuring your own safety as well as that of the animals.
Be prepared to handle emergency situations, including medical emergencies or animal escapes.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional education or certification in animal care, veterinary assistance, or a related field is a plus.
Experience: Previous experience in animal care, pet sitting, or a similar environment is preferred but not required.
Skills:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Basic maintenance skills in regards to upkeep of the facility.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge of basic animal care principles and behaviors.
Ability to lift heavy objects and handle animals safely.
Basic computer skills for record-keeping.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
Ability to lift and move animals or equipment weighing up to 60 lbs.
Ability to work in various weather conditions and cleaning environments.
Work Environment:
Fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Some exposure to animal odors, noise, and cleaning chemicals.
Flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on facility hours.
