Job Description:
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital has its own characteristics, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Coffee Road Animal Hospital and Pet Resort, founded in 1991, is a full-service veterinary practice located in Bakersfield, CA. Our facility is clean, comfortable, and efficient. Our team stays updated with the latest diagnostics, treatments, and wellness programs to ensure optimal patient health. We handle both emergency and non-urgent medical, surgical, and dental cases. Our mission is to provide high-quality veterinary care with a focus on client service and patient care.
During the externship, participants will gain exposure to basic surgical and dental procedures, develop proficiency in examinations, and learn differential diagnosis techniques. Emphasis will be placed on client and staff communication and medical record keeping. The program offers unique exposure to:
Ortho-cruciate (external stabilization techniques)
Medial Patellar Luxation Surgery
Long Bone Fractures
Various Amputations
Soft Tissue Surgeries (Enterotomies, gastrotomy, cystotomies, intestinal anastomoses, perineal urethrostomy, anal gland removal)
Ophthalmology
Tonopen
Grid Keratectomy procedures
Third Eyelid Flaps for Indolent Ulcers
Cherry Eye Tack Down Procedure
Dental X-Ray
Oral Tumor Removals
Dermatology
Wound Repair
Externship durations range from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. All veterinary students are encouraged to participate, regardless of class year. Students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Â to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
