Overview
Veterinary Assistant / Customer Service Representative Jobs in Newport News, VA at Woodland Veterinary Hospital
Veterinary Assistant / Client Service Representative
About Woodland Veterinary Hospital
At Woodland Veterinary Hospital, we believe that veterinary medicine is about more than caring for animals. It is about caring for the people who love them, supporting the people we work alongside, and treating every patient as if they were our own.
We are a privately owned veterinary hospital with a close-knit team that takes pride in providing compassionate, personalized care to our patients and their families. We are looking for someone who wants to become part of that team—not simply someone looking for a job.
This position is a combination of Veterinary Assistant and Client Service Representative (CSR). You will have the opportunity to work directly with our patients while also helping create a positive and welcoming experience for our clients.
We understand that veterinary medicine can be busy and, at times, stressful. We value people who remain kind, patient, and respectful even when the day doesn’t go exactly as planned. Communication and teamwork are extremely important to us. We believe in helping one another, asking questions when needed, and never being afraid to say, “I need some help.”
What You’ll Do
As a Veterinary Assistant/CSR, your day will include a combination of patient care, assisting the veterinary team, and working with clients.
Patient Care & Veterinary Assistance
- Assist the veterinarian with patient handling, restraint, examinations, treatments, and other procedures as directed.
- Provide compassionate care and attention boarding patients.
- Feed, walk, clean, bathe, and monitor patients as needed.
- Help patients feel safe and comfortable while they are in our care.
- Observe patients for changes in behavior, appetite, elimination, comfort, or overall condition and communicate concerns to the appropriate team member.
- Assist with preparing treatment areas and supplies.
- Follow established protocols for medication administration and patient care when trained and authorized to do so.
- Maintain clean, organized, and sanitary treatment, kennel, and patient areas.
- Properly use PPE and follow hospital safety and infection-control procedures.
- Accurately document patient care and assist with maintaining complete medical records.
Client Service
- Greet clients and their pets warmly and make them feel welcome when they arrive.
- Answer phones and assist clients with questions or direct medical questions to the appropriate veterinary team member.
- Schedule appointments accurately according to hospital protocols.
- Communicate with clients regarding their pets’ visits, medications, and other non-diagnostic information as directed by the veterinary team.
- Help clients understand what to expect during their pet’s visit and ensure they receive clear instructions before leaving.
- Process payments and assist with other front-desk responsibilities.
- Protect client and patient confidentiality and treat every client with patience, kindness, and respect.
Being Part of Our Team
- Communicate openly with coworkers and keep others informed about patient care and tasks that need to be completed.
- Help wherever needed. In a veterinary hospital, everyone has responsibilities, but no one is “above” helping with the less glamorous jobs.
- Take pride in keeping the hospital clean, organized, and welcoming.
- Follow through on assigned responsibilities and ask for help when you are unsure how to complete something.
- Contribute to a positive work environment where coworkers support and respect one another.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for someone who is dependable, compassionate, teachable, and genuinely enjoys working with both animals and people.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous veterinary hospital, kennel, animal care, or related experience preferred.
- Comfort handling dogs and cats safely and appropriately.
- A willingness to learn veterinary terminology, procedures, and hospital protocols.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions carefully.
- Good communication skills and the ability to communicate respectfully with both clients and coworkers.
- The ability to stay organized and prioritize tasks during busy periods.
- A willingness to perform cleaning and other necessary hospital duties. Cleaning is an important part of patient care and everyone’s responsibility.
- The ability to remain calm and compassionate when dealing with anxious, sick, or frightened animals and concerned pet owners.
- Reliability and a strong sense of responsibility.
- A positive attitude and willingness to be part of a team.
Previous veterinary experience is wonderful, but the right attitude matters just as much as experience. If you are someone who cares deeply about animals, takes pride in doing things correctly, treats people with kindness, and is willing to learn, we would love to meet you.
What Matters Most to Us
We are not looking for someone who simply wants to clock in, complete a list of tasks, and go home.
We want someone who cares about the patients in front of them, notices when a coworker needs help, takes the time to make a nervous pet feel safe, and understands that a client may be having one of the hardest days they’ve had with their pet.
We are a team, and we depend on one another. Kindness, communication, accountability, and a willingness to help each other are just as important to us as veterinary skills.
If that sounds like the kind of team you would like to be part of, we would love to hear from you.
