Overnight Veterinary Surgery Ward Nurse

Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists (CCVS) is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant to join our Surgery team as an Overnight Surgery Ward Nurse. This role is ideal for someone who is confident caring for hospitalized patients, enjoys the responsibility and focus of overnight nursing, and takes pride in providing attentive, high-quality postoperative care.
As part of our specialty Surgery service, you will play an important role in the continued recovery of surgical patients overnight, providing consistent monitoring, treatments, comfort, and communication with the medical team.
About the Role
Our Overnight Surgery Ward Nurses provide dedicated care to postoperative and hospitalized surgical patients throughout the night. You will work from established treatment plans while using your nursing experience and clinical judgment to recognize changes in patient status, maintain patient comfort, and communicate concerns appropriately.
This position is well suited for an experienced veterinary professional who is comfortable working independently while remaining part of a collaborative specialty and emergency hospital team.
Responsibilities
- Monitor postoperative patients and accurately document vital parameters, pain scores, and recovery progress
- Administer oral, injectable, and IV medications according to treatment plans
- Assess patient comfort and identify changes that may require additional medical attention
- Provide mobility assistance, positioning, hygiene, and other postoperative nursing care
- Monitor IV and urinary catheter sites, surgical incisions, drains, and bandages
- Communicate patient changes and concerns clearly to the appropriate medical team
- Assist with patient restraint and diagnostic imaging when needed
- Maintain accurate medical records and treatment documentation
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and well-prepared surgery ward
Schedule
This position includes shifts at both CCVS locations:
- Tuesday: 6:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. | Dennis
- Wednesday: 12:45 a.m.–7:00 a.m. | Buzzards Bay
- Thursday: 12:45 a.m.–7:00 a.m. | Buzzards Bay
- Friday: 10:00 p.m.–10:00 a.m. | Buzzards Bay
Initial training may take place during day or evening shifts
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a dependable veterinary professional who is comfortable managing hospitalized patients and understands the importance of thoughtful, consistent overnight care.
Ideal candidates will have:
- Previous veterinary technician or veterinary assistant experience
- Experience caring for hospitalized or postoperative patients
- Confidence administering oral, injectable, and IV medications
- Strong medication calculation and treatment documentation skills
- The ability to recognize and communicate meaningful changes in patient condition
- Strong time-management, organization, and prioritization skills
- A calm, dependable approach to overnight patient care
- The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with doctors, technicians, and assistants
- The physical ability to lift or assist pets up to 50 pounds and remain active throughout the shift
Experience in emergency, specialty, surgery, anesthesia, or inpatient veterinary care is especially valuable for this role.
Compensation & Benefits
- $39,000–$52,000 annually, based on experience

Pay: $39,000.00 – $52,000.00 per year
