Overview:
Lisbon Road Animal Hospital is hiring a Full-Time Veterinary Assistant to join our team!
Location: 1981 Lisbon Road, Lewiston, ME 04240
Shift Details: Our practice is open Monday thru Friday, closed on the weekends.
Typical shifts are (but not limited to):
7:00 am – 5:00 pm or 7:30 am – 5:30 pm
On Tuesday’s and Thursday’s shifts are 7:00 am – 7:30 pm. Only one late night per week.
We offer a 4 day work week schedule. Must be flexible with hours and willing to stay when needed.
Our hospital hours are as follows:
Monday, Wednesday and Fridays 7:30 am -5:30 pm Tuesday and Thursdays 7:30 am – 6:30 pm
Saturdays and Sundays CLOSED
Compensation: $19 – $20
Desired Skills –
Appointment Scheduling: Basic knowledge of scheduling appointments in a veterinary practice, ensuring an organized and efficient workflow.
Phone Call Documentation & SOAP Entries: Understands the importance of documenting phone calls accurately and entering SOAP (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan) notes in patient records.
Canine & Feline Vaccines: Familiar with common canine and feline vaccines and can effectively explain them to clients, including the importance and schedule.
Puppy/Kitten Booster Protocols: Knowledgeable about puppy and kitten vaccination booster protocols and can provide clear guidance to pet owners.
Heartworm 4DX Test & Tick-Borne Diseases: Understands what a heartworm 4DX test is, including its relevance in diagnosing heartworm and tick-borne diseases.
Preventative Care Explanation: Able to clearly explain and recommend preventive medications for flea, tick, and heartworm protection, helping clients make informed decisions for their pets.
Restraint & Muzzling: Capable of safely restraining animals and applying muzzles when necessary to ensure the safety of both staff and patients.
Blood Draws: Experienced in performing blood draws for heartworm tests, routine bloodwork, and other lab tests, ensuring accurate sample collection.
In-House Lab Equipment: Comfortable operating in-house lab equipment, performing tests, and ensuring results are processed correctly.
Medication Handling: Experience assisting the veterinarian with medication preparation and administration, familiar with commonly used veterinary medications.
X-ray Machine Operation: Basic knowledge of using an x-ray machine and proper patient positioning to capture clear diagnostic images.

How you’ll make an impact:
Our Veterinary Assistants assist the Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in all of their duties
The Veterinary Assistant helps to prepare animals for exams and surgery.
The Veterinary Assistant aids in performing medical treatments.
The Veterinary Assistant will perform or prepare laboratory tests.
The Veterinary Assistant will administer medications under the direction of a Veterinarian or Veterinary Technician.
The Veterinary Assistant will obtain and properly handle/prepare in-house and laboratory specimens (cytology, blood draws, blood smear, fecal, etc.)
The Veterinary Assistant works in cooperation with staff to attend to any immediate needs.
The Veterinary Assistant handles animals and their owners in a responsive, courteous and tactful manner, and inform staff and clients of any pertinent medical information related to animal care.
The Veterinary Assistant maintains a healthy, safe, sanitary, pleasant and clean facilities for the animals.
Qualifications:
Physical demands and work environment
The Veterinary Assistant must have the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds and lift over 50 pounds with the assistance of a coworker. Requires sufficient ambulatory skills.
The Veterinary Assistant must be able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
The Veterinary Assistant is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.
The Veterinary Assistant must be fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to perform successfully the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position.
The Veterinary Assistant must be able to exchange accurate information with all clients and team members.
