Position: Veterinary Assistant
Position Status: Hourly, Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Reports To: Medical Manager
Starting Pay: $17 per hour
Position Overview
The Veterinary Assistant supports the technicians and doctors in the Veterinary Services department. This is an entry-level position providing basic medical care to the dogs and cats housed at the shelter. The position will require a basic understanding of animal handling and knowledge.
General Duties
Assisting doctors with patients
Assisting with vaccinations.
Assisting technicians with in-hospital and surgical patients.
Updating medical records
Stocking exam rooms and treatment areas.
Maintaining accurate inventory of supplies.
Cleaning and disinfecting animal housing, treatment areas, and exam rooms.
Operating laundry equipment to provide clean kennel bedding and linens.
Sterilizing surgical equipment.
Restraining animals as needed.
Performing lab work as needed.
Administering medications
Administering subcutaneous fluids
Maintaining cleanliness of assigned areas
Complying with all policies as described in the Humane Society handbook.
Other duties may be assigned, based on the company’s needs.

Requirements:
Position Requirements
High school graduate required.
Related Work Experience
Ability to identify signs of animal illness, and injuries
Ability and willingness to become Fear Free Certified within 60 days of hire.
Skills Needed
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills required.
Ability to identify animal breeds, age, and sex.
Ability to work with Microsoft Office products and ability to learn practice software.
Ability to multitask.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to safely lift 50 pounds.
This position is labor-intensive; moderate physical exertion is required; including bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching above/below the waist, pushing/pulling movements, lifting, walking, sitting, and standing and in conditions involving temperature fluctuations.
Must work with cleaning solvents.
Must have reliable transportation.
