Tompkins Veterinary Services (“Tompkins Vet”) is excited to be expanding its team and to continue to enhance the services we provide our clients, patients, and community. We are a private hospital with fantastic clients and amazing staff! We are passionate about what we do, and the teamwork we do it with. Tompkins Vet is a relatively new clinic – we moved into our space last year – and we are slowly growing. We practice excellent medicine and are focused on providing a welcoming and professional environment for clients and pets. We are comprehensively equipped with six exam rooms, in-house laboratory, digital X-Ray, ultrasound, dental capabilities, surgical capabilities, and five fantastic team members we look forward to growing.
Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our team! If you are enthusiastic, reliable, and excited about helping us maintain our high standards of animal care and customer service, we would love to hear from you!
The ideal candidate will have a genuine love for animals, strong communication skills, and a desire to assist in providing exceptional care to our patients with an upbeat and positive attitude. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting our veterinarians and ensuring the well-being of the animals under our care. The applicant must work well with others, take direction, and have initiative. We are a paperless practice so it does require you to be computer savvy.
We have openings for full time or part time, depending on the candidate. Your availability should align with our hours of operation as follows:
Monday – Friday: 8:00am – 5:30pm
Responsibilities:
Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and other procedures.
Handle and restrain animals safely and compassionately.
Keep furry friends calm and still during procedures (sometimes using chin scratches!)
Prepare and maintain the exam rooms and treatment areas
Fill prescribed medications
Administer medications and treatments as directed by veterinarians.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the clinic and equipment.
Provide compassionate care and support to both animals and their owners.
Assist with client education on topics such as nutrition, grooming, and basic healthcare.
Understand common vaccination protocols, basic lab tests, common diseases, veterinary terminology, and pet behavior.
Keep cages clean and sanitized
Walk, feed, and pick up after the animals
Various housekeeping duties (laundry, dishes, taking out garbage etc.)
Requirements:
Previous experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal care facility is preferred but not required.
Knowledge of basic animal care and handling techniques.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Attention to detail for maintaining accurate records and following instructions.
Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and handle stressful situations calmly.
Willingness to learn and adapt to new procedures and technologies.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
