VCA SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Center is a well-staffed hospital just outside Washington DC that values being an excellent learning environment with great opportunities!
Neurology (1 opening):
We have an opening for a full-time Veterinary Assistant to work in our Neurology Department. If you thrive in a fast-paced work environment and enjoy working one-on-one with the doctors, then this is the position for YOU. Our assistants are responsible for obtaining vitals, obtaining pertinent histories, restraining for neurologic exams, assisting with MRI procedures, and so much more! Don’t know much about neurology or MRI’s? No problem, we will teach you!
Surgery (3 openings):
Scrub Nurse
We are hiring a scrub nurse to join our team. Our scrub nurses have one of the most interesting positions in the hospital as they are scrubbed in and sterile with the surgeon during all of our procedures. What does this look like? Our scrub nurses are responsible for assisting the surgeons during their procedure which includes handling of instruments, cutting suture, holding limbs, suctioning and anything else they may need from a sterile hand. On the opposite end, they are also responsible for the up-keep of the operating rooms. This includes a lot of restocking, cleaning, organizing and preparation of the operating rooms before and after the procedures. Our scrub nurses work four 10 hour shifts a week with no weekend hours!
Appointments
We have an opening for a full-time Veterinary Assistant to work in our Surgery Department. The appointment nurse position is Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm. This is a great entry-level position if you are interested in pursuing specialty veterinary medicine, but would like to gain experience before making the big plunge! Our appointment nurses are responsible for obtaining vitals and a brief history on all of our appointments. They also restrain for the examinations and assist with any radiographs or bloodwork that the patient may need.
Patient Care
As a patient care nurse in our Surgery department, you will be working with our board-certified surgeons and team of licensed veterinary technicians and assistants providing care to patients before, during and after their surgical procedures. We perform multiple procedures including TPLO’s, fracture repairs, soft tissue procedures, facial reconstruction, laparoscopic procedures and exploratory abdominal procedures to name a few! What does a day look like in the life of our patient care nurses? Our patient care nurses intake all of our surgical procedures and perform hourly treatments on those patients. Their care requires fluid pumps, syringe pumps, administering oral/SQ/IV medications, obtaining vitals including a blood pressure, and basic care for our patients. Our patient care nurses also assist with blood draws, obtaining radiographs and helping prep our surgery cases (shaving, NT, leads, etc.). This position requires working three 13-hour weekday shifts and available schedules can be discussed.
Successful candidates are able to multitask, comfortable communicating with clients and believe in the possibilities of high-quality veterinary medicine and outstanding patient care – and demonstrate the desire to make them happen.
