Position:
Veterinary Assistant at Petco Vetco Total Care full-service hospital. The Veterinary Assistant provides excellent medical care to patients and phenomenal customer care to owners. The role represents the mission and values of the practice and helps foster cohesion and motivation within the team.

Essential Job Functions

  • Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments, escort them to an exam room, obtain weight and vital signs, and record the electronic medical record (EMR). Collect thorough patient histories and document the patient visit in the EMR.
  • Assist doctors with appointments (routine and emergency), surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia, under supervision from the veterinarian credentialed veterinary technician, HOM and HLOD.
  • Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications as directed by the veterinarian, and help maintain the EMR.
  • Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results to doctor and clients, and maintain/update client/patient records.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures and assist during anesthetizing, monitoring vital parameters, and preparing for discharge or transfer to postoperative care facilities.
  • Under supervision, perform in-hospital treatments for sick patients, including administering injectable and oral medications and IV fluid therapy; keep patients clean, watered, and fed as directed; walk canine patients for elimination when needed.
  • Assist in training new staff and share knowledge as required under supervisor direction.
  • Maintain a neat and clean hospital environment and perform routine cleaning according to a maintenance schedule.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed

Nature of Supervision

In activities related to patient care, the incumbent takes direct supervision from veterinarians and the Veterinary Technician. Overall supervision is provided by the HOM/HLOD or the supervising technician for the shift.

All team members play a role in ensuring efficient day-to-day hospital operations and an optimal experience for patients and clients.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no immediate supervisory duties.

Education/Experience

  • Preferred to have at least 1 year of experience in a veterinary practice or sufficient relatable animal care experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Compassionate, professional demeanor under emotional or stressful circumstances
  • Team player willing to learn, share ideas, and adapt to change

Work Environment

The majority of duties are conducted in the Veterinary Hospital. Position requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods. A large portion of time is spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.

Contacts

This position regularly communicates with clients, veterinary specialists, and vendors providing products and services used by the practice.
