Description:
The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing high-quality care to animals and outstanding service to clients. This role is essential in maintaining a smooth, safe, and efficient clinic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist veterinarians and technicians during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures
Safely restrain and handle animals for exams, blood draws, x-rays, and procedures
Prepare exam rooms and surgical areas (cleaning, disinfecting, and setting up supplies)
Perform basic laboratory tests (fecal analysis, blood smears, urinalysis) and collect samples
Administer prescribed medications, vaccines, and treatments under supervision
Monitor patient recovery and report changes in condition to medical staff
Educate pet owners on basic care, nutrition, medications, and postoperative instructions
Maintain accurate patient records, including weight, vital signs, and services rendered
Stock and organize supplies, medications, and hospital equipment
Ensure clinic cleanliness and biosecurity standards are maintained
Assist with client check-in/check-out and scheduling as needed
Requirements:
Required Skills and Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
Completion of a Veterinary Assistant program preferred but not required
Prior experience in a veterinary clinic or animal care setting preferred
Comfort handling animals of various sizes and temperaments
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
Excellent communication and client service skills
Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work well in a fast-paced environment
Compassion, patience, and commitment to animal welfare
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods
Work Environment:
Veterinary clinic, animal hospital, or similar setting
Potential exposure to animal bites, scratches, and zoonotic diseases
Work may require evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays based on clinic hours
Reports To:
Lead Veterinary Technician or Practice Manager
