Position Summary

Reporting to the Provincial Operations Manager, Animal Centre Veterinarians are responsible for supporting Ontario SPCA Provincial Animal Centres with medical options for animals in care including prescriptions, diagnosis and medical pathway recommendations under a Shelter Medicine model. Veterinarians work under the direction of the Medical Director and Ontario SPCA protocols, supporting the maintenance of preventative health programs and shelter medicine protocols. Delivery of care is provided through telemedicine services as well as 3-4 weekly on-site visits as needed. Species supported primarily include cats and dogs, but opportunities to support small animals and birds are also available.

Customer Service

·         Directly support all animal in care, including foster and delayed adoption medical cases in partnership with Ontario SPCA RVTs, Managers and animal care staff

·         Provide clear medical options and recommendations ensuring Animal Centre Managers have the information they need to make an informed decision for their animals.

·         Represent the Society in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

Operative Procedures and Standard of Care

·         Actively advocate for animals in care in collaboration with Ontario SPCA Animal Centre teams across the province to ensure medical, emotional and behavioural needs are being met. This is achieved through daily and weekly rounds with Ontario SPCA Centre Managers, RVT’s and animal care staff.

·         Provide telemedicine services and in-person support for individual and population-based medical cases across 7 provincial Ontario SPCA Animal Centres. Services are provided for both animals in-shelter and animals out of shelter in foster homes.

·         Utilizes Society’s shelter medicine software to monitor, support, and track animals in care across the province virtually.

·         Mobile wellness clinics to provide preventative and incremental medical care to underserved communities to support and preserve the human animal bond.

·         Interdepartmental collaboration within the Society to support the Society’s mission.

·         Development of policies, protocols and disclosures in collaboration with the Operations team and Medical Director.

·         Research, track and implement shelter intake measures for emerging infectious diseases across the province and within communities where transferred animals originate.

·         Actively participate in continuing education activities to keep up with latest advancements and expert recommendations within the field of shelter medicine.

Clinical Services

·         Provide in person medical support at Animal Centres and SPCA Veterinar Clinics supporting wellness exams, spay/neuter surgeries, dental procedures and complex case management for public and shelter animals

·         Telemedicine case management achieved through close working relationship with Ontario SPCA RVT’s, Managers and animal care staff .

·         Supports mentorship of veterinary students visiting the Ontario SPCA on shelter medicine rotations.
