Job Title: Attending Veterinarian (Part-Time, On-Site)
Location: Lake County, IL (Local candidates preferred; non-local must relocate at own expense)
Schedule: Approx. 10 hours/week (range: 6–24 hours based on case volume and training); occasional emergency phone consults (~3/week) and rare in-person visits (~1–2/month) including after-hours.
Main Purpose: Provide veterinary oversight and support for research animals used in medical device studies, ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations and supporting preclinical research activities for new product development.
Responsibilities:
Ensure humane care, diagnosis, treatment, and preventative medical programs for all animals used in research, testing, and production
Participate in regulatory inspections (USDA, AAALAC), maintain compliance policies, and support the IACUC as Attending Veterinarian
Advise internal teams on animal models, procedures, and regulations; support new model development and literature alternatives
Conduct procedures, surgeries, postmortems, and analyze health metrics to optimize care plans and research protocols
Train staff on species-specific care and ensure best practices for ethical animal treatment
Support FDA submissions and study data quality for regulatory compliance
Required Qualifications:
DVM from AVMA-accredited or equivalent institution
Illinois veterinary license
Minimum 3 years of clinical experience
Experience with small ruminants (sheep/goats) – required
Knowledge of USDA regulations and federal/state/local animal research policies
Preferred Qualifications:
Lab animal medicine experience
GLP/GMP knowledge
ACLAM board certification or eligibility
USDA accreditation (or within 4 months of hire)
Familiarity with AAALAC standards and IACUC participation
