Have you considered working at an Animal Shelter? Solano County Animal Care works side by side with our community to help the residents of Solano County and their pets. We are recruiting an enthusiastic and skilled Veterinarian to provide comprehensive care and treatment along with spay-neuter surgery for our shelter animals. This individual will also participate in TNR services, public spay/neuter scheduled through our public clinic and vaccine clinics for the public. You will have an incredible veterinary tea, and other shelter team members to support you.

This is a contract position with a flexible schedule. There is a minimum commitment of three days a week.

Requirements

Possession of a valid license issued by the California Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine to practice as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine prior to appointment • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License prior to appointment

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Perform a minimum of 10-15 spay/neuter surgeries on average each working day with minimal complications. Perform other surgical procedures as indicated.• Perform surgical sterilization of owned and shelter dogs, cats and rabbits.• Perform pre-operative examinations and make decisions regarding each animal’s health and suitability to undergo surgery.• Deliver high-quality veterinary care in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.• Provide emergency medical care as needed. Provide humane care and treatment of all animals.• Induce and maintain animals under anesthesia. Operate anesthetic machine and surgical monitoring equipment. Ensure that all animals are monitored while under anesthesia.• Ensure animal medical records are maintained as required by law and according to SCAC policies and procedures.• Perform diagnostic tests including x-ray, ultrasound, blood work, cytology, as needed for animals admitted to the clinic.• Provide leadership and direction to registered veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, animal care specialists, office staff and department volunteers.• Build effective relationships through positive interaction and communication with customers, staff and volunteers• Euthanize and/or assist with euthanasia of animals as needed in accordance with SCAC policies and procedures and California state law, if medically necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Indirectly supervises registered veterinary technicians, veterinary vssistants, and assigned volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of or willing to learn:

Surgical procedures for spaying and neutering dogs, cats and rabbits.• Shelter medicine best practices.• Standard guidelines for the veterinary profession used in the State of California.• Knowledge of modern techniques for treating various animals for common diseases and injuries.• Laws, codes, regulations and policies affecting the department’s operations and programs. – Quality assurance procedures and techniques.• Training principles, practices and techniques.• Principles and practices of leadership and conflict resolution. • Ability to decide whether to perform surgery based on the animal’s health status.• Understand, interpret and apply pertinent provisions of the county, state and federal laws, rules, regulations and standards that affect the operation and administration of the shelter.• Must be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance.• Accurate record keeping• Upon hire, must pass a background check.

Physical Requirements

Extended periods of standing, stretching and bending. Must be able to lift 50 pounds independently due to lifting animals for examinations and surgeries• Ability to perform repeated hand movements in surgery without accommodation

Work Conditions

Noise exposure varies, and there may be contact with animal waste and smells• Animal contacts and related injuries, including bites and scratches, may occur

Job Types: Part-time, Contract

Pay: $115.00 – $125.00 per hour

Expected hours: 24 – 29 per week
