Overview
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the immediate supervision of the Central Coast Wetland Ecosystem Project Leader, this position performs routine (journey-level) fish and wildlife conservation work. The role involves habitat management, infrastructure and equipment maintenance, grounds keeping, public use, and wildlife research at the Central Coast Wetland Ecosystem Project, including Justin Hurst, Nannie M. Stringfellow,
D. R. Wintermann and Mad Island Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Work includes collection of biological data and assisting with wildlife research projects as assigned. Main emphasis is on wildlife habitat management and maintaining/repairing infrastructure and equipment needed for research, habitat management or maintenance activities. Assists with public hunting and other public use programs on the assigned area where applicable. Provides wildlife management information to hunters, land managers, other user groups, and the general public.
Work is performed under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
NOTE:
Bunkhouse lodging will be available.
Responsibilities
- Assist with habitat management and wildlife conservation efforts on assigned WMAs.
- Maintain and repair infrastructure and equipment used for research, habitat management, and maintenance activities.
- Perform grounds maintenance, including mowing and weed control.
- Support public use programs and provide wildlife management information to hunters, land managers, and the public.
- Collect biological data and assist with wildlife research projects as assigned.
- Coordinate and organize work activities; maintain records and paperwork as required.
- Comply with all agency, division, and branch rules, regulations, and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education:
Graduation from high school or GED.
- Experience:
FWT IA — no previous season experience with TPWD required; FWT IB — one season of experience as a TPWD Wildlife Division seasonal employee; FWT IC — two seasons of experience as a TPWD Wildlife Division seasonal employee.
- Licensure:
Valid state driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education:
Degree or enrollment in Wildlife Science, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Ecology, Range and Wildlife Management, or related Natural Resources field. Coursework in Wildlife/Habitat Conservation, Wildlife/Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Biology, and/or Research Methods. Transcripts must be included with the application to meet this qualification.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of wildlife, range, farming, and livestock practices; knowledge of terrestrial and aquatic herbicides and their application.
- Skill in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Skill in operating common farming and ranching machinery and heavy equipment (e.g., skid steers, tractors, shredders, discs, backhoes, chainsaws) and hand/tools.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) and to observe/record biological data.
- Ability to perform grounds maintenance and to meet with the public, landowners, and co-workers; maintain accurate records and prepare written correspondence.
- Ability to assist with management, research, and conducting public hunts; perform manual labor including lifting supplies.
