Job Description

Position Summary

The Operator I – Parks & Facilities is responsible for maintaining the municipality’s parks, green spaces, and recreational facilities to ensure they are safe, clean, and well-maintained for public use. This role involves landscaping, facility maintenance, and equipment operation while following safety guidelines and municipal standards. This opportunity spans from May 12th to August 22nd.

Key Responsibilities

Parks & Green Space Maintenance

Perform landscaping duties such as mowing, trimming, fertilizing, aerating, and watering municipal parks and green spaces.

Prune and maintain trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds.

Install, maintain, and repair irrigation and sprinkler systems to ensure optimal plant health.

Assist in controlling invasive plant species and ensuring proper waste disposal.

Facility & Equipment Maintenance

Maintain park buildings, fences, playgrounds, and recreational areas to ensure they remain in safe working condition.

Conduct daily inspections and routine maintenance on vehicles, tractors, and lawn mowing equipment.

Ensure proper use and storage of tools, equipment, and supplies.

Assist with minor repairs on municipal assets related to parks and public spaces.

Recreational Area Preparation & Public Interaction

Prepare parks and recreational areas for public events, bookings, and community programs.

Set up and dismantle event equipment when required.

Ensure all public spaces are free of litter and hazards.

Provide customer service to residents and visitors, responding to inquiries professionally and courteously.

Safety & Compliance

Follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, municipal policies, and industry best practices.

Participate in workplace safety training, including WHMIS, First Aid, and equipment handling.

Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure compliance with safety protocols.

Report any safety hazards or incidents promptly to the Director of Operations.

Working Conditions

Outdoor work in all weather conditions, including heat, rain, and wind.

Physically demanding tasks such as lifting, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.

Occasional weekend or evening shifts may be required for special events.

Use of protective equipment and adherence to safety regulations is mandatory.

Requirements

Education & Certifications

Minimum Grade 10 education required.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.

WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) Certification.

Additional training in Groundskeeping, Pesticide Application, or Equipment Operation is an asset.

Experience & Skills

Experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or facility upkeep is preferred.

Basic knowledge of horticulture, irrigation systems, and lawn care practices.

Mechanical aptitude and experience in routine vehicle and equipment maintenance.

Ability to safely operate various types of lawn mowers, tractors, trucks, and landscaping equipment.

Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Strong teamwork and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs. continuously throughout the workday.
