JOB DESCRIPTION

Conduct aquatic nuisance species (ANS) surveys using standardized scientific protocols in waters such as the Green and Yampa Rivers, including Gates of Lodore, Echo Park, and Deerlodge Park boat ramps. Monitor species such as zebra mussels, quagga mussels, New Zealand mudsnails, and Eurasian watermilfoil, including infestation mapping and population monitoring. Perform water‑quality monitoring as needed. Maintain detailed records and follow strict field protocols using state‑owned equipment.

Work independently or as part of a team to survey streams and rivers. Interact professionally with the public while representing the Invasive Species Program. Perform work in inclement weather, on boats, in and around water, and in backcountry settings. Possess reliable camping equipment; some nights may be in motels.

Assist the Early Detection & Rapid Response (EDRR) Specialist and Invasive Species Program Manager with any rapid‑response efforts arising from the sampling program.

Provide education to outfitters, anglers, hunters, and non‑motorized watercraft users about aquatic invasive species and how to properly clean, drain, and dry equipment. Demonstrate use of self‑serve cleaning stations and educate the public to prevent accidental transport of invasive species. Outreach includes collecting survey data, attending user‑group events and expositions, and educating recreational outfitters.

Daily hours will vary, but total weekly hours are strictly limited to 40 (overtime compensation only in special circumstances).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Must have a current valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for operating a state vehicle.
  • Possess basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite).
  • Willingness to be flexible with weekday work schedule.
  • Ability to travel extensively with overnight stays, including camping.
  • Ability to drive long hours and remain alert.
  • Ability to work closely in small crews for long hours in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work in and around water.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in natural resources, botany, fisheries, wildlife, or related field OR at least one year of coursework toward a degree.
  • Experience performing data entry.
  • Experience conducting biological field surveys, especially aquatic and water‑quality, including species identification.
  • Experience with zebra mussel, quagga mussel, New Zealand mudsnail, Eurasian watermilfoil, or other invasive species.
  • Experience boating and/or trailering (knowledge of boat and trailer anatomy, ability to launch/land in inclement weather, and tow trailers on highways and steep mountain roads).
  • Experience with ArcGIS software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Perform physical activities that require substantial use of arms and legs: climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. Ability to perceive color differences and to hear verbal and radio communications.
