Unlock Your Potential! We’re looking for a passionate TECHNICAL SERVICES MANAGER to join our I&J Aquaculture unit in Gansbaai.. In this role, you will plan, manage and control all aspects of the Research and Development; Biosecurity, Hygiene, Compliance and Micro feed portfolios for I&J Aquaculture and direct the activities within the departments.

Key Areas Of Impact

Research and Development

  • Manage all research projects aimed at improving efficiencies in the production areas namely:
  • Hatchery: Settlement, survival, broodstock conditioning, broodstock genetics and feeds.
  • Grow on: Feed, Parasites control and water quality.
  • Processing: Yield improvement and grading.
  • Assist managers with implementation of successful research improvements.
  • To co-ordinate and assist with all research projects aimed at improving efficiencies at Walker Bay Canners.
  • Development and testing of formulations that will ultimately become products.

Biosecurity

  • Ensure measures are in place to protect against the entry and spread of diseases in abalone.
  • Implement and run clinic trials on hygiene related scenarios and studies.
  • Protect livestock against transmission of disease.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOP) for all employees to adhere to, related to hygiene and biosecurity.
  • Develop, implement and maintain the ongoing effectiveness of the internal health surveillance programme, biosecurity program and manual.
  • Undertaking measures, including adherence to relevant legislation, to minimise biosecurity risks resulting from business activities.
  • Proactively engage with government on biosecurity issues.
  • Manage investigations into biosecurity breach incidents.
  • Manage and enforce mitigation strategies during biosecurity breach events such as Red Tide.
  • Manage all external audits and training related to Biosecurity.
  • Controlling and auditing of all documentation like procedures and checklists relating to Biosecurity.

Compliance

  • Manage, enforce and track governmental permit conditions.
  • Manage all internal and external sampling related to governmental permit conditions.
  • Manage submission of required reports.
  • Manage information preparation for all external audits including, but not limited to, ASC and Stock Inspections.

Micro Feed

  • Manage the maintenance diatom and Ulvella mother cultures.
  • Manage and enforce diatom and Ulvella seeding schedules.
  • Manage and enforce HMP for Ulvella and Diatom culture areas.
  • Ensuring high quality and sufficient quantity Ulvella racks and diatom bags are available for operational needs.

Implementation and management of Technical Services budgets

  • Strategic budget planning.
  • Budget implementation and assessments.
  • Capital expenditure budgeting and motivations.

People Management

  • Ensure and oversee efficient and effective people management.
  • Manage staff performance by setting appropriate Key Performance Deliverables (KPD’s) and targets.
  • Continually strive to up-skill and motivate staff through effective leadership, mentoring, coaching, performance improvement and the creation and implementation of individual development plans.
  • Monitor the implementation of training needs.
  • Ensuring all employees comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Time management of staff.
  • Discipline in case of unfavourable behaviour.

What It Takes To Succeed

  • 5-10 years relevant experience is preferable
  • Exposure to aquaculture, fishing or forestry industries would be an advantage

Qualifications & Certifications That Will Contribute To Your Success

  • A Biological Science degree (Honours) or equivalent is required
