Job Summary

Provide excellent medical care to Planned PEThood’s foster pets and public Wellness clientele. Provide thorough and compassionate examinations and treatments for public Wellness and foster patients. Perform HQHVSN surgeries when available, also willing to perform other “minor” surgeries to affordable care clients. Ensure excellent pre-, peri- and post-operative care of surgery patients. Essential Job Functions
Provide examinations, treatment recommendations, and vaccines for public pets in our Wellness clinic.
Refine and improve protocols for veterinary care of owned animals attending PPOG’s Wellness and Outreach clinics.
Recommend products to be dispensed or sold during Wellness clinic care, considering both the animals’ needs and PPOG’s profitability.
Perform examinations and treatments for foster pets, adhering to health protocols established for pets in our adoption program.
Perform HQHVSN surgeries as the “second” surgeon, responsible for 5 – 10 surgeries per shift, when scheduling allows.
Perform “minor” surgeries resulting from Wellness appointments when appropriate.
Provide care plans for foster animals with specific illnesses, injuries, or medical conditions, referring to outside specialty clinics as needed and communicating with outside veterinarians providing such specialty care.
Perform foster intake exams and contribute to decision-making pertaining to responsible intakes. Also contribute to foster euthanasia decisions.
Refine and improve SOPs for veterinary care of animals in PPOG’s foster program, including input protocol and vaccination schedules.
Ensure adequate medical/treatment instructions and notes are provided in patient records via Clinic HQ and/or PetPoint.
Ensure the smooth operation of PPOG’s Wellness/Foster clinic, including adequate staffing and training of support staff.
Assist with the oversight of Wellness/Foster clinic staff, ensuring adequate knowledge and encouraging peak performance.
Actively lead the development and refinement of PPOG’s Wellness and Foster programs to maximize patient care and revenue generation.
Secondary Job Functions
Examine animals pre-op to determine their ability to withstand surgery.
Perform surgical sterilizations, following established guidelines for high quality, high-volume procedures.
Perform other medically necessary/responsible procedures while patients are present for surgery.
Examine animals post-op as necessary to ensure appropriate healing.
Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow up care.
Ensure proper handling and recording of controlled substances.
Provide post-op rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery.
Other General Duties and Responsibilities
Adhere to established protocols for safety, cleanliness, and prevention of disease.
Assist with ongoing Wellness/Foster clinic staff member training.
Provide input for Wellness/Foster clinic staff performance reviews as requested.
Participate in regular staff meetings.
Effectively “team lead,” displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members.
Ensure all Wellness/Foster clinic staff members are adhering to proper standards of care.
Communicate any issues concerning personnel or protocol with Director of Customer Care, Medical Director or CEO as appropriate.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours
Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly
Must be able to see fine detail in a variety of situations
Must have good hearing including ability to distinguish changes in pitch
Must have acceptable sense of touch and smell
Must have good range of motion in joints especially wrist, knees, elbows
Must have good range of motion in your back for instance twisting
Must possess excellent hand-eye coordination
Must possess an acceptable degree of dexterity in hands and fingers
Must have good vision including peripheral vision, fine detail, distance, depth perception and ability to focus
Emotional/Mental Requirements
Must be able to work under stressful conditions efficiently and effectively
Must be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations
Must be able to cope with death either due to surgical complication or euthanasia
Ability to rapidly and accurately process information
Ability to delegate tasks
Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help
Ability to make decisions
Ability to cope with frustrating situations and remain calm
Potential and Prolonged Exposures
Prolonged exposure to various aqueous solutions including but not limited to dish soap, chlorhexidine and spectra soap
Prolonged exposure to isopropanol, hydrogen peroxide
Potential exposure to formalin solution
Potential/Prolonged exposure to isoflurane gas
Prolonged exposure to quartenary ammonium cleaners and bleach
Prolonged exposure to pressurized steam
Potential exposure to sharps including needles and surgical blades
Required
Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the state of Georgia.
Must maintain current DEA licensure OR adhere to licensing veterinarian’s requirements for usage and recording of controlled substances.
Work Environment

The offices and operations of a nonprofit medical center and high volume spay and neuter clinic can be high stress and very busy at times. Appointments are scheduled four days/week, usually Monday through Thursday, plus occasional Saturday outreach clinics; however, the schedule can change and may sometimes require weekend or evening hours for meetings, training, or events.
