Duties:
- Managing and training barn staff and tack up staff;
- Managing horse welfare and fitness program;
- Competition specific preparation of horses;
- Horse show entries and horse show daily management;
- Developing training programs;
- Providing care to horses both at home and on competition grounds;
- Manage scheduling of farrier, veterinary, and any follow up care prescribed;
- Formulate inventory management programs including implementation of appropriate technology to help support new programs;
- Manage orders from, and all vendors for feed supply, hay supply, barn supplies;
- Manage all indoor arena and outdoor arena maintenance;
- Manage all staff recruitment, hiring, retention, and scheduling;
- Formulate feeding programs;
- Follow safety and bio-security procedures;
- Recognize and treat certain equine health and soundness issues;
- Maintain equine performance records;
- Perform general farm duties;
- Develop and implement the daily routine for all in-barn work;
- May supervise general farm workers and manage staff performance and performance reviews.
Requirements:
- Min 7 years of progressive experience required –
- At least 2+ years of experience as a paid barn manager for a top level professional program with both national and international horse show grooming and customer management;
- Progressively senior leadership responsibilities of developing training, daily management and feeding programs for top performance show horses and higher maintenance lesson horses;
- Played a leadership role in preventative care as well as treatment of injuries related, but not limited to, high level competitions;
- Demonstrated ability to work as both a show groom and at-home manager simultaneously in a competition setting while managing staff remaining at the home farm;
- Experience working for top trainers and high-level show horses – Benchmark students attend horse shows of all levels of sanctions including local, national and international competitions. Each competition has a different set of rules around preparation, training, medication and actual showing. This person must be familiar with competitions at the top level. It is also important that this person’s former employment demonstrates merit from a marketing perspective to draw new clientele.
- 4+ years of work experience external to the equestrian industry –
- Experience in an office environment performing a role that gives the candidate boarder experience in managing systems, technology and other business elements;
- Experience developing and implementing tracking systems, communications processes, and other streamlined process to increase efficiency;
- Experience in cost management exercises;
