Schedule: 5 days per week
Monday – Friday, with occasional weekend day coverage (as needed/infrequent)
Salary: $120,000-$140,000 annually
Job Description: The Shelter Veterinarian is responsible for overseeing the veterinary care, evaluation and treatment of all shelter animals, ensuring the highest quality of care is provided. The Shelter Veterinarian is expected to perform routine and specialty surgeries, abide by all Florida State laws and regulations, complete continuing education courses, and maintain best practices. In partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and Director of Veterinary Services, the Shelter Veterinarian will strive to continuously seek methods for improvement of both medical quality and performance of the shelter veterinary team.
Qualifications:
Must have a graduate degree from an accredited school of veterinary medicine
Must maintain a current Florida State Veterinary license and continue CE credits annually
Must maintain a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration license in accordance with Florida State law.
Comfort handling all companion animals, including but not limited to dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, and rodents
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers and HSP clients
Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time and lift 40 pounds or more.
Job Responsibilities:
Execute sound and timely decision-making regarding animal patients in accordance with HSP policies.
Determine surgical needs and perform surgical procedures including, but not limited to, spay/neuter, hernia repair, enucleations, amputations, mass removal, heartworm treatments, etc
Ensure all veterinary work and services are performed in accordance with Florida State laws, county policies and best practices
Perform emergency treatments when necessary
Provide occasional veterinary services to owned animals within the community based on program needs and collaborations with other animal welfare organizations.
Make sound, educated and timely decisions regarding each animal’s medical treatment and outcome
Supervise and implement medications according to current protocols
Maintain current and accurate animal records into ShelterLuv, the Shelter’s software
Review laboratory testing including, but not limited to, radiographs, cytologies, urinalyses, blood tests, etc
Ensure all animals in the shelter are being handled using the least restraint possible and maintain a low-stress interaction between staff and animals.
Ensure the shelter medical facilities are cleaned and sanitized daily and as necessary (i.e. after surgical procedures, spills, pet accidents, potential contamination, etc.)

Constantly seek new methods that may benefit patients and HSP
Follow and promote all HSP policies and philosophies in all interactions with staff, volunteers, and the public on and off site
Handle any monetary transactions accurately and securely
Participate in staff and department meetings and training opportunities
Be prepared to assist in any disaster affecting HSP
Honor confidentiality of shelter business
Stay up to date with all procedure and policy changes
Follow and promote to the public all HSP policies and philosophies
Handle animals humanely and safely at all times
Demonstrate a high quality of work standards and work ethics
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer
