This recruitment will be used to fill multiple seasonal positions and may close at any time once vacancies are filled. Apply early for best consideration.

Your New Role

As a seasonal, full-time Park Ranger Assistant, you will assist park staff with the protection, maintenance, operation, and repair of park lands, natural and cultural resources, and facilities, equipment, and systems at the Wallowa Lake Management Unit. You’ll focus on specific tasks such as janitorial work, landscape maintenance, interpretation, or visitor services, with some positions requiring basic skills in building trades.

You may also guide volunteers or seasonal staff in completing park-related tasks as needed.

Overview of the Area

Wallowa Lake State Park serves as a hub for boating, fishing, and hiking at the foot of the Wallowa Mountains. Nearby, Iwetemlaykin State Heritage Site offers views of the Wallowa Valley. Downriver, Minam State Recreation Area provides access to rafting, fishing, and wildlife viewing along the Minam and Wallowa Rivers.

We recruit for seasonal positions each year that generally work April through September; however, the duration may vary depending on the park”s specific needs.

Housing is NOT available at this location.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Six (6) months of experience (paid or unpaid) performing public contact or customer service duties (e.g. Teacher, Customer Service Representative, Salesperson, Receptionist, etc.) and/or maintenance experience (construction trades, landscaping, custodial, etc.).
  • OR Six (6) months of college in any discipline (24 quarter hours/16 semester hours).

Special Requirements

  • To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver’s license.

Desired Attributes

  • Excellent communication skills with experience providing exceptional customer service, answering inquiries, explaining rules, and managing upset customers.
  • Experience using computer to complete work tasks and ability to use computerized reservation system.
  • Experience in handling cash transactions, making change, and preparing simple cash reconciliation reports.
  • Experience in performing janitorial duties (e.g., cleaning restrooms, toilets, and showers).
  • Skilled in using tools, materials, and equipment for landscape, facility, and building maintenance, including basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and groundskeeping tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting and promote a culturally competent, diverse work environment.
