Seasonal Horticulture Assistant
The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden offers a unique experience in public horticulture, combining animal immersion habitats within a botanical garden environment. Established in 1875, it is the second oldest zoo and display park in the US. The Garden features a diverse collection of woody and herbaceous plants, an expansive nursery, and large summer annual displays, making it one of the region’s largest trials for annuals and perennials.
The Horticulture Department seeks enthusiastic individuals with a genuine interest in horticulture. This is an excellent opportunity to expand your knowledge in plant care, identification, and maintenance. A positive attitude and strong work ethic are essential to fit into our team.
Position Overview
The Horticulture Department is seeking Seasonal Horticulture Assistants to join our team. Assistants will work alongside Horticulture Staff to perform various tasks, including:
Garden Maintenance – habitat upkeep, pruning, planting, watering, mulching, and weed control in naturalized garden areas.
Display Garden Installation and Maintenance – maintaining conservatories, soil preparation, planting, watering, weed control, pruning, and container plant care.
Nursery Growing and Maintenance – watering, growing, pest control, labeling, and inventory assistance.
Projects – assisting with landscape installation, planting, and soil grading.
Outer Property Maintenance – mowing, trimming, planting, mulching, and weed control in parking lots and community gardens.
Garden Event Preparation – helping set up and facilitate garden events.
Qualifications and Experience
Preferred:
Education or experience in horticulture or landscape maintenance. Must be able to lift and move 50 pounds, possess a valid driver’s license, and be insurable to operate Zoo vehicles.
Working Conditions
Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Flexibility to work on weekends and holidays is required. Duties involve standing, walking, manual dexterity, bending, exposure to weather, and handling various plant materials.
Position Requirements
Passion for plants, willingness to learn, and ability to perform outdoor physical labor.
Ability to operate landscaping equipment and vehicles safely.
Knowledge of plant species and cultivars.
Responsible herbicide use when necessary.
Leadership in volunteer groups, teamwork, and visitor assistance.
Support during peak seasons for planting, potting, and landscape installation.

Job Details
Duration: Various periods starting March 2023.
Hours: 20-40 hours per week, variable.
Pay Rate: Dependent on experience.
