Public Works – Maintenance Worker I

The Poquoson Public Works Department is seeking a reliable, hands-on Maintenance Worker I who’s commitment to public service will be on display in this physically demanding role and will play a critical part in keeping our public spaces safe, functional and looking its absolute best, where no two days will look exactly the same. This position is full-time, non-exempt.
Maintenance Worker I
General Definition Of Work
Performs intermediate semi-skilled and manual work in the construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities, buildings, grounds, streets, utilities and related facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the appropriate project supervisor.
Qualification Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Essential Functions
- Performs general infrastructure maintenance on streets and drainage projects.
- Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, and other materials, tools and equipment.
- Spreads asphalt and patches holes in street surfaces, assists with concrete work.
- Digs trenches and ditches, cleans catch basins, manholes and drainage lines.
- Performs other street and utility maintenance duties; performs custodial, building and grounds maintenance work.
- Mows grass, edges sidewalks and curbs, weed eats, trims trees and shrubs.
- Other duties as assigned, required or requested.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Some knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas and related construction, maintenance and repair procedures; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific verbal instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education And Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in infrastructure maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through verbal communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non weather) and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant). Special Requirements
- Flagging License within six months
- Valid commercial driver’s license with Class A endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire

Job Details
Category Open Positions Status Open Salary $39,311 – $43,242 annually. This hiring range is within the approved pay grade and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The City of Poquoson may consider a salary within this advertised range for an outstanding candidate with exceptionally high qualifications and extensive, directly related experience, subject to internal compensation policies and budget approval.
