Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) plays a leadership role in the biosecurity system in collaboration with its stakeholders. BQ leads the Queensland Government’s efforts to protect our way of life, environment, biodiversity, human and animal health, industries and economy from plant and animal pest and disease threats. Through supporting the collective efforts of our stakeholders and all Queenslanders, BQ will continue to protect our state and Australia from emerging plant and animal pests and diseases and effectively manage existing ones.
Animal Biosecurity and Welfare (ABW) supports BQ’s efforts to prevent, prepare, respond to, and recover from diseases threatening livestock industries and maintaining access to markets. Our people work together to help mitigate biosecurity risks, uphold standards for animal welfare and animal management and lead the overall DPI response to biosecurity emergency incidents to achieve outcomes consistent with the Department’s strategic direction for leadership in animal welfare, exhibited animal, animal management and animal ethics policy and service delivery.
The Opportunity
As our Principal biosecurity officer, you will provide operational services that protect and enhance animal biosecurity and welfare in Queensland.
- Undertake compliance activities under Queensland legislation Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 and the Biosecurity Act 2014.
- Thorough knowledge and skills relating to administration and compliance with relevant legislation and associated internal procedures and systems (e.g., exercise of powers, auditing, investigation, conducting interviews, collecting evidence and witness statement and preparing court briefs, use of BQ Case Management).
- Participant and contribute to disease surveillance and emergency responses activities, which may include collection of samples from the live and deceased animal.
What We Are Looking For
- It is a mandatory requirement for a technical officer to possess an Australian Diploma or Associate Diploma in a relevant field or equivalent (e.g. animal science, production or husbandry or animal biosecurity and welfare) from a recognised tertiary institution.
- For international qualifications, the applicant will need their qualification assessed, to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework. The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
- It is a requirement for all Biosecurity Queensland positions to have a criminal history check completed.
You May Also Have
- Appointment under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 and the Biosecurity Act 2014 will be favourably regarded.
- Practical experience in animal welfare and disease investigations in the field will be favourably regarded.
- An understanding of biosecurity response activities and the Queensland Disaster Management Arrangements and/or experience in applying your capabilities in a response environment will be favourably regarded.
