The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Research within this multidisciplinary department includes aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science, environmental engineering, disease ecology, animal welfare science and didatik.

Subject area for the position: Ecology with a focus on animal welfare

Location until further notice: Location Kalmar. As Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the locations may occur.

Scope and duration of employment: Employment in accordance with the postdoctoral agreement. Full-time for 2 years.

Starting date: By agreement, preferably May 2026.

Job Description

Your work as a postdoctoral researcher will mainly consist of research in ecology with a focus on animal welfare science. You are expected to actively participate in the department’s knowledge environments and networks, both internally and externally.

You will be part of an international research project focusing on animal behaviour and welfare in pigs, where behavioural science is integrated with artificial intelligence and deep learning for the assessment of animal welfare.

You will have a central scientific role in the planning, implementation and development of behavioural studies. This includes field-based research in commercial and experimental farming environments, analysis of complex behavioural data, and leading the work of preparing and publishing scientific articles in collaboration with international partners.

In addition to the activities of the main project, there is the opportunity to participate in other ongoing research within the animal welfare research group, including contributions to related projects and collaborative initiatives.

Teaching and supervision, comprising no more than 20% of the total workload, may be included among your duties.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, the applicant must have been awarded a doctoral degree in Animal Science, Veterinary medicine, Ethology, Biology, or have a foreign degree considered equivalent.

In accordance with the postdoc agreement, applicants who were awarded their degree no more than three years prior to the last application date for the present position should be considered first.

An applicant must not previously have been employed as a postdoc for more than a year within the same or a related subject area at Linnaeus University.

For eligibility for this position, the following is also required:

  • Documented experience of research on animal behaviour and welfare in farm animals
  • Documented experience of planning and conducting behavioural studies
  • Documented experience of quantitative analysis of behavioural data
  • Documented scientific publication in relation to career stage
  • Very good ability to communicate in English, both spoken and written, as the work takes place in an international research environment
  • Valid Swedish driver’s license (category B). The position involves conducting field-based research in farming environments, which may involve travel.

Assessment criteria

The following will be considered in the assessment of applicants:

  • Scientific expertise in animal behaviour and animal welfare
  • Experience of working with pigs in research or production environments
  • Good knowledge of quantitative and statistical analysis of complex datasets
  • Experience of interdisciplinary research environment
  • Ability to communicate in Swedish
  • As the work is carried out in a research group, collaborative ability and flexibility are given great importance

In the overall assessment of applicants, particular emphasis is placed on the applicant’s scientific competence, independence and potential to develop innovative research within Animal Welfare Science.
