Position: Park Utility Worker (DPW Parks) (CDL REQUIRED) (Permanent)
Job Overview
Park Utility Workers perform a wide variety of laboring work in the city parks and are responsible for the operation of specialized landscaping or grass cutting equipment. Work involves general maintenance of parks, ball diamonds, golf courses, playgrounds, recreational facilities, and other buildings under the department’s jurisdiction. Incumbents perform minor maintenance work on the equipment and are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment.
Immediate supervision is received from the Park Supervisor I; supervision may be exercised over Laborers and Laborers I and II.
Equipment Operated
- FWD Front End Loader (hi‑lift) with Clam Bucket for removing debris and loading topsoil and gravel onto trucks needed to maintain ball diamonds, parks, and golf courses – with plow attachment for snow removal.
- Interstate/F‑10 Grass Cutting Tractors (hydraulic operated cutting mechanism) used on golf courses and in parks.
- Front Loading Tractor with York Rake or Scraper attachments for grading and preparing ball diamonds.
- LCG Tractor with Mott Hammers or Bush Hog used for cutting grass on slopes or inclines.
- Cushman – small grass cutting machine.
- Tri‑Cutter (Jacobson 5111).
- Various tonnage of dump trucks to haul topsoil or gravel and with plows for snow removal.
- Backhoe and small grader, and Zamboni machine for cleaning ice surfaces at rinks.
- Skyworker for trimming and removal of trees.
- Weedwhackers, lawn mowers, rotadoras, and other equipment.
Responsibilities
- Perform general maintenance of city parks, ball diamonds, golf courses, playgrounds, recreational facilities, and other buildings, both indoors and outdoors.
- Operate specialized equipment listed above.
- Perform minor equipment maintenance: daily checks of zerk fittings, grease, fuel, and oil levels.
- Maintain vehicles and garage upkeep.
- Perform manual work related to specialized/regular equipment operation.
- Assist in building maintenance at ice rinks, community centers, and other facilities, including restroom cleaning and snow removal.
- May be required to operate a snowplow during winter emergencies.
- Act as crew chief on work crews when needed.
- Perform related work as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Current CLASS A or B Commercial Driver’s License issued by NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, presented at time of filing and maintained throughout employment.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to operate a variety of specialized and regular automotive equipment.
- Ability to use related tools.
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral directions.
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
- Experience:
Six months of on‑job training or equivalent on the operation of specialized landscaping/grass cutting equipment including Dump Truck and Hi‑Lift with bucket (front‑end loader). Official training certificates verifying the ability to operate the hi‑lift with bucket will satisfy the experience requirement.
