Position: Park & Recreation Ranger 6-E8 (Bass River Recreation Area)

This position involves participating in the daily activities related to the operations of Parks and Recreation Division facilities. The employee will assist the Unit Supervisor/Lead Ranger with administrative tasks and perform operational and maintenance duties. Responsibilities include training and guiding staff, maintaining grounds, infrastructure, and equipment, and other duties as assigned. Safety of oneself, co-workers, and the public is a personal responsibility.
Position Description
This position requires the ability to obtain and hold a DNR Law Enforcement Commission.
Attendance at the Parks and Recreation Division Law Enforcement Academy and Ranger Operations Academy is mandatory. These trainings, totaling approximately 12 weeks, focus on incident handling, Parks & Recreation Rules, and park operations, and require overnight stays at a learning facility.
Eligibility criteria for a Commissioned Park and Recreation position include:
Passing a pre-employment physical exam by a designated healthcare provider.
Successfully completing the Parks and Recreation Division Law Academy.
Being at least 21 years old before graduation from the Law Academy.
Possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a Michigan driver’s license.
Having a driving record free of suspension or revocation for two years prior to attending the Law Academy.
Having a driving record free of moving violations for two years prior to attending the Law Academy.
Having a clean criminal record, free of felonies or high court misdemeanors.
Michigan DNR Commissioned Park and Recreation Ranger Law Physical Requirements
Educational background typically includes high school completion.
Experience requirements vary by Ranger level:
Ranger 6:
No specific experience required.
Ranger 7:
At least one year in a park/recreation setting or construction trades.
Ranger E8:
Two years in park/recreation, with one year equivalent to Ranger 7; college credits in natural resources, park management, or outdoor recreation may substitute for experience.
