Position Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Medical Director to lead our clinical team. You’ll deliver top-tier veterinary care in a diverse practice setting, collaborate with experienced colleagues, and contribute to our culture of integrity, service, and compassion. The ideal candidate will be passionate about providing high-quality veterinary care and possess excellent communication skills to build lasting relationships with our clients.

You will work alongside a team of experienced veterinarians, technicians, and support staff and will work closely with the Hospital Manager and Regional Manager.

Animal General in Avon is a well‑established, full‑service veterinary hospital serving the Farmington Valley and greater Hartford region. We provide compassionate, high‑quality care to dogs and cats across all life stages—from preventative medicine and dentistry to soft‑tissue surgery, internal medicine, diagnostics, and urgent‑care services. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high‑quality veterinary medicine and surgery to dogs and cats (routine exams, preventive care, dental, internal medicine, soft‑tissue surgery).
  • Participate in diagnostics using our in‑house lab and imaging capabilities.
  • Educate clients and build long‑term relationships.
  • Collaborate with our team across departments to deliver seamless patient care.
  • Lead clinical protocols, mentor colleagues, and drive hospital initiatives and growth.
  • Comprehensive patient exams and medical work‑ups.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures and surgery.
  • Pharmacy duties such as prescribing medications to patients and following controlled substance protocols.
  • Work with the Hospital Manager on weekly priorities and expectations.
  • Evaluate and monitor protocols for the daily running of the hospital from intake to discharge.
  • Monitor cases in the hospital and attend daily rounds when possible to ensure the highest standards are being upheld.
  • Participate in practice management updates and training at all levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Management.

Qualifications (Required)

  • Veterinarian degree (DVM or VMD) from an accredited college or university.
  • DEA registration must be obtained and maintained.
  • 1+ years of experience in a veterinary practice.
  • Ability to work well in a team‑oriented environment.
