Position: Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)

Our stationary and mobile clinics help pet owners overcome barriers to care, subsidizing the cost of basic and preventive services. What you’ll do
As a veterinary technician on the Community Medicine team, you will work closely with veterinarians and assistants to perform high‑volume spay/neuter surgery, preventive care, and treatment of minor illnesses. Your duties will include administering anesthesia, providing supportive care, monitoring vital signs, and assisting with diagnostics and patient exams. You will also perform administrative tasks, support staff training, and uphold the ASPCA’s animal‑safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Care for 35‑40 cats and dogs per day in spay/neuter surgery.
- Administer injections, including anesthetics, pain medications, vaccines, and other medications.
- Intubate animals, place intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture, and administer fluids as needed.
- Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients during pre‑operative, operative, and post‑operative phases.
- Provide treatments and supportive care according to the CM Standard Operating Procedures and as directed by the attending veterinarian.
- Create a safe and compassionate environment for animals, staff, and clients using low‑stress handling techniques.
- Assist with patient exams, take medical histories, perform diagnostic testing, and prepare home‑care medication instructions.
- Maintain controlled substance logs and patient records.
- Stay current on emergency drugs and protocols.
- Ensure all equipment is functional and report any malfunctions.
- Assist with humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and CM protocols.
- Clean and disinfect animal areas, equipment, instruments, and facility while using appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Provide medical support in special cases, including evaluation of animals in hoarding situations.
- Communicate with clients in a non‑judgmental, professional manner and explain veterinary medical concepts.
- Enter medical information into digital databases and represent ASPCA professionally.
- Adhere to OSHA protocols and CM Standard Operating Procedures.
- Collaborate with ASPCA colleagues and participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications
- Current New York State Veterinary Technician License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment).
- Excellent animal handling skills with cats and dogs.
- Proficiency with computers and software applications.
- Ability to lift and carry 40+ pounds repetitively with assistance.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain composure in challenging conditions.
- Strong interest in animal welfare and underserved communities.
- Fear Free® Shelter certification required within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to exemplify ASPCA’s core values and behavioral competencies.
Education and Work Experience
- Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program (2- or 4‑year) or equivalent as determined by the New York State Education Department.
- Prefer experience in surgery or anesthesia.

Compensation and Benefits
Target hiring range: $34.60 – $37.00 per hour. This role is eligible for a $1,500 signing bonus and a $1,500 retention bonus after one year. Work Schedule
Typically Monday–Friday, 8‑hour schedule with occasional additional hours as needed.
