The Licensed Veterinary Technician is the doctor’s primary medical support person. They begin the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis and treatment phases. They aid the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They have a very significant role in communicating with clients about their pets (horses, animals.)
ï‚· Provides compassionate care to patients.
ï‚· Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
ï‚· Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas or vehicle.
ï‚· Performs physical examinations; records observations on patients.
ï‚· Assists the doctor in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
ï‚· Gives injections and administers oral medications in accordance with hospital policy.
ï‚· Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
ï‚· Assists in restraining pets (horses, animals) when necessary.
ï‚· Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
ï‚· Takes radiographs and administers EKGs and EEGs.
ï‚· Admits and discharges patients on the doctor’s orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
ï‚· Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
ï‚· Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
ï‚· Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
ï‚· Assists other staff members as required.
ï‚· Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
ï‚· Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
Other Duties include: performing in-house lab work, digital x-ray, sample collection, care and treatment of hospitalized patients, surgical assisting/anesthetic monitoring, dental prophylaxis, nutritional counseling, client education and some administrative duties.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $20.00 – $28.00 per hour
Expected hours: 12 – 40 per week
